Become a Wildflower Garden Volunteer:

Are you interested in gardening? Do you love native wildflowers and getting your hands dirty? Would you like to learn more about habitat gardens as well as community vegetable gardens? Then join Credit Valley Conservation and Ecosource to become a Wildflower Garden Volunteer! As part of Ecosource’s Community Cultivators Program, the Wildflower Garden Volunteers will build skills and learn about gardening while maintaining the Habitat Garden at the Parkway Green Generation Garden!

Job Description:

The Wildflower Garden Volunteers will attend weekly evening “work bees” with other Community Cultivators to maintain the garden. These work sessions will include garden observation, weeding and tidying up the site as required. The Wildflower Garden volunteers will also fill in the site monitoring sheet, taking note of: tasks completed, plant growth, site disturbances, future maintenance requirements, and even visiting birds, butterflies and bees.

Core Duties:

  • Wildflower Garden maintenance
    • Weeding
    • Applying mulch
    • Guiding other Community Cultivators in Wildflower Garden maintenance
  • Wildflower Garden observation
    • 10 minutes of garden observation at each visit
    • Completion of garden monitoring form at each visit
    • Photographing garden

All training will be provided.

Time Commitment:

This program requires a commitment for the whole growing season (March to October), including attendance at:

  • Orientation Session on Saturday, February 25th, 10am-12pm
    • Please note that the deadline to apply is only a few days before this mandatory training. We will let successful candidates know by February 22nd if they have been selected.
  • Weekly 2 hour garden maintenance “work bees”, May to October (weekday and time to be determined depending on volunteers’ availability)
  • 8 Monthly Training Sessions at various Ecosource Community Gardens, March to October

Start Date: February 25th

End Date: Mid-October

Skills or Education Required:

  • Some experience with gardening or native plants
  • Ability to complete written maintenance report at each visit and provide regular updates to staff via email
  • Willingness to learn
  • Ability to lift moderate weight
  • An interest in vegetable gardening
  • Ability to take good photos an asset
  • Demonstrated reliability and leadership qualities
