VOLUNTEER POSITION

Position: Mosqoy Field School Coordinator
Type: volunteer, 8 month minimum, subsidized accom. available

Mosqoy is excited to offer a unique position within our new social enterprise, the Mosqoy Field School! Based out of Cusco, Peru, the objective of the Mosqoy Field School Coordinator position will be to coordinate and facilitate field schools and tours within our three branches: High School Tours, University Field Courses, and Short Excursions. The Mosqoy Field School Coordinator will make regular visits to our partner communities, setting up tour logistics and curriculum, trouble-shooting and guiding during the tours, and working in collaboration with our other personnel to develop a successful program.

Mosqoy is a registered Canadian charitable organization that works in remote communities of the Peruvian Andes, offering opportunities for economic development while nurturing the threatened indigenous Quechua culture. We operate three main programs. The T’ikary Youth Program offers opportunities for post-secondary education to promising youth of the Andes region. Upon graduation, these students will become professionals in their field of study, and leaders for their communities. The Q’ente Textile Program supports indigenous communities and women weavers by revitalizing textile traditions through its social enterprise. The Mink’a Knowledge Exchange Program aims to raise global awareness and responsibility in schools and universities in North America through courses and presentations, and through our Field School in Peru. Details

  • Volunteer position with potential for growth
  • 8-month minimum commitment
  • Expected number of work hours: approximately 40-35 hours per week during tours & excursions; 15 hours/week during off-season
  • Flexible, unconventional schedule
  • Job-related expenses are covered
  • Subsidized accommodation available at Casa Mosqoy
  • Location: Cusco, Peru, with the opportunity to visit remote communities in the Peruvian Andes
  • Start Date: March 2018

Required Skills & Attributes

  • Advanced language skills, written and spoken, in both Spanish and English
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field
  • Awareness of theoretical issues and critiques regarding international development, sustainability, tourism, and cultural diversity
  • Knowledge about indigenous rights and development issues
  • Public presentation skills
  • Prior experience working with youth
  • Prior experience facilitating intercultural relationships
  • Strong IT skills with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and electronic communications platforms
  • Basic digital photography skills and ability to upload photos online
  • Physical capability to travel to remote communities by foot
  • Demonstrated self-starter and the ability to work autonomously
  • Multi-tasking and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to new environments, be resourceful, and be sensitive to cultural differences
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work in multi-cultural, collaborative environment
  • Creative and enthusiastic, to seize new opportunities and identify potential areas for improvement and growth

Assets

  • Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Demonstrated project development experience
  • Previous fieldwork experience, preferably with indigenous communities
  • Previous experience living abroad, preferably in a developing country and/or in Latin America
  • Experience working with disadvantaged populations
  • Volunteer experience in international development
  • Experience in activity facilitation and/or outdoor recreation
  • Experience working with teenagers and/or education
  • Able to hike long distances, and ideally have some background in outdoor recreation and activity facilitation
