Position: Mentor Co-ordinator
Organization: Fire & Flower: Girls Rites of Passage
Location: Vancouver BC

Seeking a self-identified women for the volunteer position of Mentor Coordinator for Fire & Flower.

Fire & Flower is a new coming-of-age rite of passage program for girls ages 12-14 starting this May. The 4-month program provides a meaningful and holistic transition into young womanhood through mentorship, ceremony, and nature connection. Participants are welcomed into a community of women mentors to explore topics such as body image, relationships, personal fears, sexuality, etc. The girls will build confidence and pride in becoming young women, gain valuable friendships, and experience a powerful coming-of-age ceremony. We are a very small but commited group putting this program together in our voluntary time because of our deep belief in this work. Please check out our website:

Nature connection is a major component of this program, guiding participants to not only know their belonging to the human world but also to the more-than-human world. We spend a significant amount of time in nature including a weekend away on Vancouver Island for the coming-of-age ceremony. There, participants’ wild and beautiful inner natures are reflected in the wild forests and waters. This is sustainability in action; we are co-creating with nature, in nature, to honour important moments in our lives and in doing so, honouring and ever-integrating nature in us. Over time, such integration creates the deep motivation and love needed for environmental work. For specific ideas about women, rites of passage and environmental connections please see:

A commitment of January-August is required, though the amount of work changes significantly over the 8 months. March & April will require 5-10hrs/week and the other months about 0-3hrs/week. The actual program with participants runs May - August, but most of your work happens beforehand screening and organizing mentors. You will be supported by the program lead, and are welcome to join us with the participants May-August.

As Mentor Coordinator, you will be part of a community that values gender empowerment, ceremony, nature, emotions, ancestors, honesty, supporting each other, curiosity, laughter and good fun. Your work will involve:

  • Reviewing mentor applications

  • Interviewing mentor applicants

  • Checking references

  • Organizing mentor paperwork

  • Helping to plan & implement mentor training weekend in April

  • Being a general support person for mentors

Comfort with administrative tasks and computer applications (eg. email, digital filing) required.

Experience mentoring (eg. Big Sisters, UNYA) and/or reviewing applicants an asset but not necessary.

Please call or email us if interested. Thanks so much!
