Position: OURSpace Garden Assistant
Organization: High Park Nature Centre
Location: High Park, Toronto, Ontario

OURSPace Garden Assistants will help shape the landscape of OURSpace – our outdoor classroom – by weeding and watering our native plant gardens. This outdoor classroom promotes awareness and respect for nature through educating our visitors and the public about the native plants of the Black Oak Savannah, pollinators, bats, birds, and more.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Weed and water the native plant species in the outdoor classroom
  • Engage with public visitors in the garden by sharing information on the High Park Nature Centre’s programs
  • Encourage public visitors to view the educational installations in the outdoor classroom (i.e., snake hibernaculum and audio bee booth), and share basic natural history knowledge with visitors
  • Model respect and appreciation for the natural world
  • Demonstrate kindness and professionalism when communicating with fellow volunteers, Nature Centre staff, and public visitors
  • May be opportunity to aid on community planting days

What we are looking for:

  • Passion for gardening or strong appreciation of the natural world
  • Basic plant identification skills or interest in learning plant identification
  • Can lift heavy hoses, push a wheelbarrow, and use various gardening tools with ease
  • Reliability

Commitment: This position requires a commitment of approximately 1-2 hours per week at a regularly based on your own schedule.. The 2017 garden session runs from May to September.

4. Police record check (fee reimbursed by the High Park Nature Centre after 10 hours of volunteer work)
