VOLUNTEER POSITION

Position: Evergreen Adventure Camp - Bike Buddy (Age 15+)

Start date/term of position: Minimum 2 weeks, 8 hours/day, between July 4, 2017 and September 1, 2017

Help kids connect with nature at Evergreen Adventure Camp through cycling in Toronto’s ravines!

Bike Buddies will work alongside camp staff and volunteers to lead bicycle programming for campers aged 6-15 year olds. Primary tasks include preparing bicycles, communicating how to ride safely, building campers’ confidence in cycling, and supervising rides.

What You Bring:

  • Experience working with children
  • Comfortable on a bicycle
  • Familiarity with the basic aspects of bike mechanics and safe cycling
  • Comfortable working outside in various weather conditions (i.e., rain, heat, etc.)
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Must be 15 years old or older
  • Must have a Valid Police Record Check (if you are 18 years old or older)*
  • Outdoor/environmental education and first aid training considered an asset
  • *NOTE: Police Checks will be initiated and paid for by Evergreen, as part of the screening process.

Your Commitment: Bike Buddies must commit to at least two full weeks of camp during the summer. Camp runs July 4th to Sept 1st with full 8-hour days of volunteering running either 8:30am-4:30pm or 9:30am-5:30pm from Monday to Friday. Note that bicycle programming will occur Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Monday’s and Friday’s, Bike Buddies will help assist Camp Counsellors with other camp roles.

Camp Location: Evergreen Adventure Camp takes place at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Ave) with bicycle programming happening both on-site and in the adjacent City of Toronto park. Evergreen runs a free shuttle bus from Broadview station, while Castle Frank station is just a short walk to our site.

How We’ll Support You: There will be mandatory training sessions on June 26-28, with additional training happening on the job from staff and experienced volunteers. Training will include a program overview, safety protocols, and game/activity facilitation tips.

Perks: As a Bike Buddy, you’ll get to work with kids outside on bikes, while learning about natural history in Toronto’s ravine system. You’ll also inspire young minds to love nature, gain outdoor skills, and be part of a dynamic team of staff and volunteers. By becoming a volunteer, you’ll also get an Evergreen t-shirt!

To become a Bike Buddy you need to:

  • Participate in a brief phone interview.
  • Participate in an in-person group interview.
  • Provide contact information for one reference and begin the police record check process (if you are 18 years old or older).
