What is fruit recovery?

Fruit recovery or “gleaning”, is an ancient practice where surplus or leftover produce is collected from commercial, public, and privately owned farms, fruit trees, or gardens based on an agreed partnership between the gleaner and the owner. This practice reduces produce waste and brings people together in improving a community’s food security status.

Who are we?

Richmond Food Security Society (RFSS) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire a robust Richmond food system through education, advocacy, and community building initiatives. Healthy people, community, and environment – that is our vision.

What will you do?

  • Attend a Volunteer Orientation
  • Pick up boxes and equipment to gleaning location
  • Arrive early before each scheduled fruit pick to introduce yourself to the tree-owner, set-up equipment, and to assess the pick site
  • Greet your gleaning team and provide a brief orientation of fruit gleaning procession and safety procedures
  • Glean fruits safely and efficiently while supervising your team’s equipment, personal, and food safety; weigh and record your harvest
  • Divide up the harvest: 1/3 for tree-owners, 1/3 for volunteers, 1/3 for the Richmond Food Bank, and deliver harvest to designations safely
  • Ensure the gleaning site is cleaned up and tidy; thank the tree-owner and volunteers
  • Report to the Fruit Recovery Program Coordinator at the conclusion of every shift
  • Return any equipment you picked up

  • Love picking fruit and be as excited about gleaning as we are!
  • Be respectful of tree-owners’ property and privacy; be able to represent RFSS well
  • Be able to commute to various locations in Richmond
  • Be comfortable working outside
  • Be able to follow and relay safety instructions; collaborate well with your gleaning team
  • Driver’s license and your own vehicle to use for transporting harvest
  • First-aid certification valid within the last 3 years
  • Criminal Record Check (RFSS will support you through this process during training)
  • At least 18 years old
