VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Two positions:

  • Admin & HR Team Leader
  • Assistant Admin & HR Team Leader

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Position: Admin & HR Team Leader
Organization: Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City Initiative (OBEC) http://obec-evbo.ca
Location: Ottawa, Ontario (regular meetings, but no office)

OBEC is looking for a volunteer to lead a small team addressing administrative and human resources activities of the Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City Council. OBEC is a charity creating a culture of sustainability through engagement and cooperation.

The team leader’s main work is to help team members accomplish their tasks. This includes organization of team meetings (actual or virtual), ongoing liaison with team members, and communication with OBEC Council (see below) on team activities. Although the team leader might choose occasionally to share tasks of other team members, this is not a requirement. It is more important that the team leader focus on coordination to make the team effective.

Other team members, who are being recruited, include: Assistant Team Leader (understudy and sounding board for the leader), Meeting Facilitator (for OBEC Council meetings), Content Manager (for OBEC materials) and Human Resources Coordinator (recruitment and support for OBEC volunteers).

OBEC makes sustainability easy to understand, with 10 Themes (Transportation, Energy, Design, Habitat, Food, Natural Capital, Waste, Health, Recreation, and Sense of Place) that cover all potential areas of action. It also uses four simple Tools of engagement – Council of Stakeholders, Database of Projects, Sustainability Plans, Demonstration Projects – as explained on the website (obec-evbo.ca).

OBEC Council meets regularly to discuss sustainability issues and develop projects. OBEC Board meets separately on strategic and financial issues.

Operational teams are essential for the functioning of OBEC and its projects. Other teams include: Communication, Database, Programming and Website. Currently there are about 25 members who participate in Board, Council or Team meetings. Additional volunteers may participate in projects.

For this position, an initial commitment of 3-4 hours / week for a year is requested.

The Assistant Team Leader would provide advice to the team leader and replace that person when absent. For example, the Assistant Team Leader might organize a team meeting when the Team Leader is away.

Other team members, who are being recruited, include: Meeting Facilitator (for OBEC Council meetings), Content Manager (for OBEC materials), and Human Resources Coordinator (recruitment and support for OBEC volunteers).
