VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Position: Reptile Field Technician
Type: volunteer positions, shared accom. may be available on-site or in the field
Organization: Saving Turtles at Risk Today (START) Project
Location: Orillia, study areas across Ontario

Turtle Conservation Project

Excellent opportunity to gain experience with wildlife conservation and research, public education, stewardship projects, turtle rehabilitation, and also have a lot of fun! This is a joint project with the Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital, Laurentian University, the Canadian Wildlife Federation and numerous community organizations.

Primary tasks:

  • Working with field staff, survey for turtles in wetlands, water bodies, and along roads, capture turtles for data collection and radio-telemetry, track turtles
  • Nesting surveys, egg excavation, and DOR surveys
  • Install nest cages, remote cameras, and other monitoring tools
  • Assist with radio-telemetry of species at risk turtles in Ontario

If interested:

  • Assist with public education programs about turtles and other herpetofauna
  • Assist with the operations and development of a turtle rehabilitation centre and related activities, such as educational resource development, social media, etc.

Requirements:

  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and stay well organized
  • High degree of indestructibility and perseverance despite a variety of environmental conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, etc.)
  • Passion for camping and the outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Strong swimming skills (wading, swimming, and paddling in cold water is required)
  • Scheduling flexibility, internal motivation, ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations
  • Positive attitude and a passion for reptiles and their conservation

Location: Based near Orillia, our study area is roughly south Muskoka and Lake Simcoe watershed.

Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site at Scales, or in the field.

Opportunities are on-going but volunteers are especially needed from late April to late June.
