Positions: Conservation Youth Corp Volunteer
Organization: Credit Valley Conservation
Location: Mississauga, Brampton & Caledon, GTA/Peel Region, Ontario
The Conservation Youth Corp (CYC) Summer Program is full of fun, learning and hard work! As a CYC volunteer, you will spend your week on a crew of seven youth volunteers and be mentored by a Crew Leader. On many days you will also be working with other crews, making the CYC program a great way to meet people from all across your watershed!
Your Crew Leader will pick you up each morning around 8:00am at a local high school and bring you to the work site. On Monday, training and orientation will take place at Terra Cotta Conservation Area. Tuesday through Friday are work days and projects and locations change each day so you have the opportunity to see many different areas of the watershed and learn about a variety of environmental restoration projects. Once the project is done, there may be time to explore a local Conservation Area, take a hike, or learn about local wildlife! At the end of the day, your Crew Leader will drop you off at 3:00pm at the same high school you were picked up at.
All training and tools will be provided. All you need to bring is lunch, a refillable water bottle and a good attitude! Of course, you also must dress appropriately.
So what exactly will you do as a CYC volunteer? Well, it changes all the time. Each week crews will be faced with a different set of projects, which may include:
And it won’t be all work. There will be some time for fun and exploring too, maybe a soccer game at lunch, or a trip at the end of the day to areas of interest around the watershed like the Cheltenham Badlands.
To be eligible to volunteer with the CYC program, applicants must be living or going to school in the watershed (please check the watershed map), at least 14 years of age, have completed grade 9, and are planning to return to high school in the fall. We only have 252 spots and we usually get over 500 applications, so apply early! Student volunteers are selected through a lottery type system based on when they are available and where they choose to be picked-up. The more weeks you are available and the more pick-up/drop-off locations you select, the easier it will be for us to find you a volunteer placement!
Other Volunteer Opportunities — If you would like to volunteer before the summer, CVC also offers a variety volunteer workdays throughout the spring, summer and fall. Most of these volunteer days require a commitment of 2-5 hours of volunteering time and involve many different types of stewardship projects. For more information and a list of volunteer opportunities please visit the CVC Volunteer webpage.
We are starting to select volunteers for Crews this summer. If you have applied, please keep an eye on your email as we will start to send out confirmations in the next month. Anyone who has applied will be notified whether they are selected or not to volunteer with CYC this summer.
