Growing Chefs! Chefs for Children’s Urban Agriculture is a registered charity that runs a Classroom Gardening and Cooking Program in elementary schools to get kids excited about growing, cooking, and eating good, healthy food. We believe in the importance of connecting young children to their food through hands-on learning, connecting them to nature and teaching them how their food choices impact their personal health and the health of the environment. You can learn more about us and our programs on our website: http://www.growingchefs.ca.
In our program, volunteers are paired with a classroom in Grades 1-3 to give students hands-on gardening and cooking experience. And we need your help! Many of our volunteers are chefs, or individuals who work in the restaurant industry; the program was built around them sharing their experience preparing food. Because growing food is also a key component of our curriculum, we are also looking for volunteers with growing and gardening experience to share their expertise.
This year as we are looking to recruit over 150 volunteers to reach over 1,500 kids. It’s a wonderful way for individuals to give back to the community and a great opportunity for them to share their incredible knowledge and passion about food, cooking, and gardening. All skill levels welcome!
Not only is it a minimal commitment, it’s also a ton of fun and a great opportunity to meet other members of the community! See (and share!) our video of some of our classrooms and volunteers in action!
We are starting our 2017 volunteer orientation sessions the second week of February, so sign up now!
