Position: Volunteer Coordinator
Organization: The Backyard Farm and Market
Location: Mississauga, Ontario

Anticipated Start Date: ASAP

The Backyard Farm and Market is currently in search of Volunteer Coordinators who will work closely with the Market Director and Market Team to further develop market outreach strategies and support/recruit volunteers and vendors for the market. The Backyard Farm is a Mississauga based non-profit organization that relies on the commitment and engagement of its volunteers in the community.


  • One day a week and / or some Sat mornings (9-1pm) during the growing season May-Oct.

  • Team meetings as needed (once a month or so)


  • Help solicit, interview, support and coordinate volunteers to work for the market

  • Helping deliver and build capacity for the Backyard’s community programs (Farmers’ Market, Market day music, Healthy Eating Eco-Kitchen on Market day, Community Gardens)

  • Ensure the safety of all new and returning volunteers through the Backyard Farm and Market’s Safety Orientation Program

  • Coordinate with Market Management to organize a volunteer team for specific tasks and events

  • Make sure all required volunteer information (contact information, emergency contact information, safety forms, media release forms) are accounted for and kept confidential

  • Track and coordinate site work in accordance to work plans and Market needs

  • Communicate significant issues (health and safety issues, farm and community issues) that happen promptly to Backyard community development mentor

  • Communicate successes and challenges of the role and work to The Backyard team

  • Participate in planning and implementing a volunteer appreciation event in October


  • Developed communication and organization skills

  • Digital literacy

  • Passionate about fostering connection with vendors, community members and volunteers

  • WHMIS/First Aid Training (Current)

  • Long term interest in project strategy and planning
