WindShare Co-operative is an innovative wind power co-operative, the first of its kind in Canada. WindShare is a joint partner in Canada's premier urban wind turbine located at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario. Over the past 18 years, WindShare has continued to demonstrate the possibilities of community ownership in renewable energy.

WindShare’s mission is to demonstrate leadership and action in the community wind power sector, and to inspire community power projects that are sustainable – economically, environmentally, and socially. WindShare provides an alternative to large, centralized energy generation with the development of local and inclusive community power projects.

WindShare members contribute to a more sustainable energy future via memberships and investment in community power projects.

Desired Skills

  • Accounting / Financial acumen
  • Understanding of financial reports and audit methodology
  • Able to translate financial information and financial concepts for board of directors
  • Strategic thinking – able to foresee financial options and decisions needed for co- operative’s goals
  • Attention to detail


  • Provide leadership in the financial life of the co-operative
  • Oversee financial matters of the co-operative;
  • Liaise with WindShare staff to develop and present financial statements and reports to the board of directors;
  • Ensure proper accounts and records are kept;
  • Budgeting and cashflow;
  • Act as counter- signatory on charity co-operatives;
  • Liaise with charity staff to ensure that charity’s annual accounts are compliant with the CRA guidelines;
  • Consistent attendance at board meetings (at least 70% - i.e. 5 out 7 meetings per year);
  • Participate on ad-hoc and issue committees as needed (e.g. Event planning, Fundraising, Program Development, Partnership, etc.);
  • Support partnership building;
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization in your community;
  • Preparation in advance for regular board meetings, including review of materials provided;
  • Three-year term with the possibility of extension;
  • Willing to participate on a voluntary basis.

Time Commitment

Quarterly Board Meetings — 3 hours/meeting

Financial Report Preparation for Board Meeting — 2 hours/meeting
Available to additional meetings/discussions — 1-2 hours/month (email/phone or in-person)
