Position: Treasurer
Organization: Peterborough Regional Farmers' Market
Location: Peterborough, Ontario

The Peterborough Regional Farmers Network respectfully recognizes and acknowledges that it is situated on the treaty and traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg. We welcome the contributions that individuals from various communities bring to our organization, and invites First Nations, Inuit and Metis people, people of colour, women, men, LGBTQ+, working class people, single parents, members of ethnic minorities, immigrants and people with disabilities to become involved with the organization.

The Peterborough Regional Farmers Network is a not-for-profit organization that supports farmers in the Peterborough region. It governs two farmers’ markets in downtown Peterborough and its Board of Directors has a fiduciary responsibility to oversee the finances of both these markets. The Network also oversees the finances of other PRFN projects; and projects that we peruse with partner organizations. Since its inception in 2017, the PRFN has received many grants and donations, as well as other funding beyond market revenue.

The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the finances of the organization and keeping the Board up to date on the PRFN’s financial health and well-being.

The Treasurer works with a bookkeeper and accountants to:

  • Track income and expenses;
  • Perform a biweekly payroll;
  • Produce monthly financial statements, including profit and loss and a balance sheet, and present them to the Board of Directors at monthly board meetings;
  • Produce year-end statements including an audit requirement, as specified by the Board of Directors, or applicable law in the Not for Profit Act; and,
  • File a yearly not-for-profit tax return, including T4 slips for all Network employees.

The Treasurer is also responsible for managing the Network’s bank accounts, or overseeing account management by designated staff. This includes:

  • Submitting hours worked by employees to our bookkeeper, paying employees via cheque, email money transfer, or direct deposit, and sending employees their payroll slip from the bookkeeper;
  • Making deposits into the Networks’ bank account;
  • Reimbursing staff, board members, and/or volunteers for out of pocket expenses via email money transfer or cheque; and,
  • Other banking tasks.

Finally, the Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the financial health of the organization, which may require:

  • Consulting the Board on sound financial decisions;
  • Seeking and applying for grants and investment opportunities; and,
  • Building partnerships with financial stakeholders that support the organization.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, or accounting software
  • Experience with bookkeeping and accounting
  • Grant writing experience
  • Past board experience, especially in Treasurer role
  • Ideally some knowledge of local food and farming sector
