Positions: Teaching Assistants for Middle and High School Programs
Organization: Mathstronauts
Location: based in Hamilton, Ontario. All positions are virtual - 100% of volunteer duties are done virtually and there is no requirement for in-person work.

About Us

Mathstronauts is a registered nonprofit organization that offers innovative and creative experiential learning opportunities for youth focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We host after-school programs, competitions and social events (virtually for the 2021 - 2022 school year) to engage our students through projects and activities.

Position Description

Mathstronauts is offering 3 virtual programs for youth: STEAM Engine (for middle school students), IGNITE Program (for high school students) and NEXUS Program (for post-secondary bound high school students). We are seeking 20 teaching assistants to offer support to our instructors during live virtual sessions.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Attending 10 or 12 sessions of the program (2 hours per week) virtually.
  • Providing one-on-one support to students to rectify issues with their projects (eg. coding errors, 3D modeling errors, technical issues, etc.) by creating breakout rooms.
  • Answering questions posed by students via a live virtual chat.
  • Monitoring and managing classroom behaviour.
  • Modeling excellent classroom etiquette and professionalism at all times.
  • Attending required training to become familiar with program content.
  • A few Teaching Assistants will be selected to be “Lead TAs” who will have the added responsibilities to:
    • Take attendance during live virtual classrooms.
    • Mark assignments (complete/incomplete marking scheme, with feedback to students).
    • Monitor other TAs in live virtual classrooms.
    • Promote engagement, conversation and a positive learning environment.
    • Report any serious situations to the Program Administrator.
    • In your application, please indicate if you are interested in being a Lead TA.

Assets

  • Experience in programming (Python, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, or Scratch block coding).
  • Excellent basic knowledge of basic scientific and engineering principles.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classrooms).
  • Comfortable using video conferencing software.

Recognition

Hours will be tracked on Gigit, and Community Service Hours Sheets and/or Reference Letters will be available upon request.

Hours & Location

2 hours weekly for 10 or 12 weeks (Oct 12, 2021 - January 14, 2022) – WORKING REMOTELY (from home)
