We are currently seeking an Indigenous student to join us here at FED for an exciting summer internship!

We are looking for someone to support the team in our next phase of the Learning Garden – an Indigenous food & medicinal plant garden.

Some key responsibilities include curating plant selection, assisting in workshop and interpretation design, community building, curating social media content and aiding with the installation process.

Here at FED, we value taking initiative and approaching challenges with a positive, can-do attitude. Strong communication skills and a passion for gardening, food and sustainability are also a must.

We are a team who is hard-working and passionate about creating a regional centre for education about food growing and food sustainability in urban spaces.

Summer Intern Job Description

Title: FED Summer Intern – Indigenous Garden
Location: #415-620 View St., Victoria BC

Position Length: June 25th to August 24th, 2018 (8 weeks)
Hours & Compensation: 30 hours per week, $14 per hour

The Food Eco District (FED) is a local non-profit that is working to create a downtown district that celebrates food and sustainability. FED envisions a vibrant and distinct neighbourhood in Victoria's downtown core that showcases local leaders in restaurant sustainability and enhances public spaces with an abundance of edible gardens. This district will contribute to a conversation about food security and urban agriculture on Vancouver Island, and will attract tourists and locals alike. By partnering with the finest eateries in the district and beyond, FED is planting food, eating local, and growing a movement. It's time to get FED!


Working with LifeCycles Project Society, FED is building a Learning Garden in the large courtyard of Victoria’s downtown public library. The Learning Garden will be a regional centre for education about food growing and food sustainability, offering ongoing programming for the public on how to save seeds, identify plant varieties, and grow food in urban spaces. It will animate and beautify public space that is in need of revitalization and place-making, creating a new community space for Victoria citizens to enjoy.


FED is currently seeking an Indigenous student for an exciting summer internship. Our summer intern will help design and coordinate the next phase of the Learning Garden project at the Victoria Public Library: An Indigenous Food & Medicinal Plant Garden.


  • Support the learning garden team in designing and curating plant selection for an Indigenous Plant Garden at the Learning Garden, focusing on plants that have traditional uses and value to the Coast Salish people
  • Coordinate an engagement workshop to solicit feedback on Indigenous Garden design; build partnerships with the Indigenous community (artists, elders, youth, etc.)
  • Support content creation for garden signage and interpretation,
  • Assist with designing food security workshops, particularly workshops in the Indigenous Plant Garden
  • Curate content for social media
  • Assist with the installation of an urban food garden at the Learning Garden (shovelling dirt, planting, watering, etc.)
  • Support Learning Garden Grand Opening event planning, including invites to and participation from the Indigenous community


  • Must be a secondary or post-secondary student returning to school in the Fall
  • Takes initiative; self-motivated work ethic
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Strong communications skills
  • Computer literate
  • A passion for gardening, food, and sustainability is a huge asset!
