Volunteer Position: Seaquaria Guardian
Organization: World Fisheries Trust
Location: Victoria, BC

Casual/ Flexible hours (4-8 hours per month) for a minimum of 4 months

Start date: Flexible

APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 20, 2020

About Us:

World Fisheries Trust is a Canadian, non-profit organization dedicated to the equitable and sustainable use and conservation of aquatic biodiversity. We act internationally with small-scale fisheries in Latin America and locally with environmental education including: the Seaquaria in Schools program, Gorge Waterway Nature House, Eco Learning Hive, and community-based environmental monitoring.

We are searching for outgoing and knowledgeable volunteer educators to assist with the delivery of school programs and/or tank monitoring. Volunteers will gain valuable experience and workplace skills in childhood education, environmental not for profits, and marine biology. There is a potential to grow within the organization, and we always strive to connect volunteers with interesting opportunities and various community initiatives. This is a group of people you want to get involved with!

The Seaquaria Guardian will:

  • Visit 1-3 Seaquaria schools once every week or every 2 weeks to monitor the health of the tank(s)
  • Collaborate with the contact teacher and other faculty on ways to provide hands-on and inquiry based learning for students of all ages
  • Aid in developing educational resources specific to the tank(s) which can be shared among the teaching community
  • Educate youth on the vast biodiversity along our coast and the role these animals (and the students themselves!) have in ocean ecosystems
  • May be called upon to assist with in-class educational programs at their guardian schools

While no experience is necessary, prior knowledge of marine organism diversity, ecosystem functions, and experience with children are an asset!

How to Apply:

Applicants should send a resume and completed application package to info@worldfish.org by January 20, 2020. Upon successful application you will be invited to an orientation and training session prior to your start. Please note that you will also need to submit a criminal record check.
