Position: Retail Sales Assistant

Toronto Botanical Garden - Mission: To connect people to plants, inspiring us to live in harmony with nature. Vision: To be renowned for our display of nature's beauty and as a dynamic hub for plant-centred learning, conservation and research.

The Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) Garden shop team needs additional volunteers to help in this beautiful facility.

Volunteers are needed for shifts on Sunday mornings (9.45 -1pm) and Friday afternoons (1pm - 4.15pm)

This role has lots of variety as volunteers in the Garden Shop assist customers, handle sales transactions and help put together and maintain displays of products. Garden shop volunteers are also active at most of this worthy not for profit special events, including "pop up shop"at different locations!

Previous retail experience and comfort handling cash systems is an asset but not essential as training with shop supervisor and an experienced volunteer will be provided.

Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 6 months. This is a social not a solo role as volunteers work in pairs for each shift.

Skills required:

  • Excellent communication skills (first class English language ability – comprehension and verbal);
  • Computer literacy, able to use email and TBG's sign up and scheduling systems and learn the point of sale system used in the Garden Shop
  • Patience; and
  • An eye for accuracy.
  • Volunteers need to enjoy an active mobile role (this is an on your feet role including trips up and down stairs).

Additional Information:
Training is provided by shop supervisor and experienced volunteers through job shadowing and coaching. There are also written materials available to support this role.

Garden Shop Float Team

We are also looking for additional members of the Garden Shop Float team - an important role that ensures that any shifts not filled by the regular team can be covered. It is expected that a float team member will be able to fill 2-3 shifts per month in order to maintain skills and knowledge. This is a proactive role with the expectation that the float team member will check the sign up site on a regular basis and sign up for open spots as they arise (rather than wait to be reminded/asked).
