Scales Nature Park is home to Canada's largest collection of native reptiles and amphibians. We are focused on the conservation of Canadian reptiles and amphibians, and the habitats that sustain them.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Assist with the husbandry of a large live collection of reptiles and amphibians, consisting of approximately 400 individuals of 70+ species, including more Canadian species than any other facility in Canada plus various exotic species
Learn husbandry protocols, requirements and environmental conditions for many species
Learn and practice safe and appropriate handling methods, including training with snapping turtles, large lizards, large snakes and rattlesnakes
Clean and sterilize animal enclosures and furnishings as required. Assist with enclosure modification and animal enrichment
Feed various reptiles and amphibians, or assist with feeding, based on the needs of each species
Administer medications and feed supplements as directed
Supervise volunteers who are assisting with animal care tasks
Learn to use computer software related to the management and record-keeping of the animal collection. Update, input new animals and create health notes for individuals as required
Assist with public education, facility development, habitat restoration and field research projects as time allows and as appropriate to the interests of the student
