VOLUNTEER POSITIONS IN TORONTO

Position: Canoe and Kayak-Instructor-In-Training (IIT)-Summer Camps

ROLE STATEMENT

Position: Canoe and Kayak-Instructor-In-Training (IIT)
Department: Recreational Learning
Number of Vacancies: 12

Duration: June 22-September 4, 2020 (Training: June 22-26 / Summer Camps: June 29-September 4)

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30AM-4:30PM / 40hrs per week

PLEASE NOTE: This is a volunteer position and hours may be eligible for high school volunteer requirement. At the end of the camp season, IITs will receive a letter indicating the total hours/weeks they volunteered.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The IIT Program is open to applicants who will be at least 15 years of age within the calendar year and have an interest in improving their paddling skills and being a mentor to younger Campers. Our 2020 Camps begin Monday, June 29th and run for 10 weeks to Friday, September 4th. Camps do not run on Canada Day (Wednesday, July 1st) or the Civic Holiday (Monday, August 3rd). Participants are expected to volunteer in our camps a minimum of 4 weeks during July and August, but you are welcome to volunteer for more weeks if you chose to. IIT participants are also encouraged to attend Pre-Camp Training Week, which runs from June 22-26, 2020.

While at camp, IITs will learn from the Senior and Junior Instructors how to run our Canoe & Kayak camp programs and improve their own skills. IITs will rotate through each of the Canoe & Kayak camps and will have the opportunity to improve their interpersonal, leadership and outdoor skills, as well as make new friends and create some great memories.

DUTIES

  • Attend pre-camp training week
  • Learn leadership from Senior and Junior Instructors
  • Gain further paddling skills
  • Preparation of boats prior to start of camp day
  • Assist in cleaning, maintenance, and putting away after camp day
  • Other duties as required

SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

Essential Criteria

  • At least 15 years of age within the calendar year;
  • Must volunteer a minimum of 4 weeks July and/or August;
  • Some paddling experience;

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous Harbourfront Centre Canoe & Kayak camper;
  • Camp and/or babysitting experience an asset;
  • Volunteer experience an asset;
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR or Standard First Aid and CPR an asset;
