MARINE ANIMAL CONSERVATION

Position: Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary – Internship in Greece 
Type: 3 to 12 months, unpaid, monthly fee includes accom., meals, more (see below)

Background: Archipelagos is at the early stages of developing a research and rehabilitation facility for rescued marine mammals. In addition to providing high-quality medical care, it will also serve as an educational tool to highlight the problems facing the marine environment. Much work still needs to be done before the sanctuary is operational

Description: As construction of this facility is not yet completed, this internship will not involve animal care and instead be focused on the crucial task of helping to prepare for its operation. Thus, the intern will be responsible for helping with a variety of activities, including:

  • Assisting with fundraising efforts by searching for partners/sponsors, applying for grants, and organizing fundraising events
  • Strengthening public relationships by creating social media content and public awareness campaigns
  • Creating educational material for the facility
  • Preparing literature reviews and other scientific writing

Applicant Profile

  • At least one year of college or university studies in the fields of education, social sciences, marine biology, art, communications, and/or related fields
  • Comfortable working under low supervision as well as leading a project independently
  • Proficiency using and managing social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram)
  • Experience in public relations and/or journalistic writing
  • Experience in scientific writing
  • Experience in fundraising
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a dynamic, multi-cultural, multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • High standard of work
  • Fluency in English
  • Sincere desire to work towards Archipelagos’ conservation efforts
  • Motivation to live in a small island community

Duration

A minimum duration of 3 months is highly recommended for all participants, although shorter placements can be tailored to the needs of groups and individuals. Placements can last as long as 12 months.

Location

Archipelagos’ research bases and stations in the eastern Aegean Sea, on the islands of Samos and Lipsi. The sanctuary is being constructed in Lipsi.

Placement fee:

Monthly fees of 650 euro cover:

  • Living expenses (shared accommodation, all meals, Wi-Fi)
  • Use of equipment & research boats
  • Transport for working purposes
  • Greek language lessons

Students and recent graduates are advised to explore possible funding through their universities, by getting in touch with the Finance / International Relations / Placement/ Erasmus+ Offices at their Universities or other relevant grant providing organizations in their region.

*Travelling costs are NOT included and are covered by the participant.
