We're building a regional fibre system centered around local fibres, local dyes, and local labour.

About Us

The Upper Canada Fibreshed is a not-for-profit organization.

Since 2016, the Upper Canada Fibreshed has been working with local fibre farmers, artists and mills within a 400 km radius of Toronto in Ontario to demonstrate the potential of a reinvigorated Canadian natural fibre value-chain for textile production. This model enables more meaningful and direct connections between producers and consumers, changing the way we make, shop and use textiles.

Our Board

We are currently recruiting board members to join our team at the Upper Canada Fibreshed who are passionate about our cause and can contribute to the growth of our movement. To serve as advocate and ambassador for our mission and strategy.

We believe in good governance which includes accountability, transparency, responsiveness, consensus oriented, participation, efficiency, inclusivity and diversity.

We are currently conducting a 5 year strategic plan. New board members must be able to participate in the virtual strategy session meetings.

Skills Required

  • Fundraising – help to raise money and retain members
  • Participation – in bi-monthly board meetings and annual events
  • Communication – strong communication skills
  • Teamwork – teamwork and team management skills

The following positions are available.


  • General: Acts as the president/chair in his or her absence; assists the president/chair on the above or other specified duties.
  • Special Responsibilities: Frequently assigned to a special area of responsibility, such as membership, media, annual dinner, facility, or personnel.


  • General: Manages the board's review of, and action related to, the board's financial responsibilities. Regularly assess potential risks and how such risks should be mitigated
  • Reports: Ensure proper maintenance of financial records and tax returns. Regularly reports to board on key financial events, trends, concerns, and assessment of fiscal health. Prepares annual budget for Board approval. Monthly financial reporting. Keep a calendar of filing requirements and deadlines.
  • Finance Committee: Chairs the Finance Committee and prepares agendas for meetings, including a year-long calendar of issues. In larger organizations, a separate Audit Committee may be chaired by a different person.
  • Cash Management and Investments: Ensures, through the Finance Committee, sound management and maximization of cash and investments.
  • Manage filings and audits as required by Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Develop and enforce strong internal controls and financial management policies for Board review.
  • Have the financials audited whenever required or deemed as necessary.


  • General: An expert with experience with a task the organization is undertaking, helping the board of directors, or the management executives make better decisions about how to proceed. They have no final say in any of the decisions of the organizations they serve. They are simply a group that provides advice.
