The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust (ORMLT) is a registered charity that has secured 60 properties with over 4,480 acres (1800 hectares) of land on the ecologically significant Oak Ridges Moraine and adjacent lands, by means of conservation easements, donations and land purchases.

ORMLT is currently recruiting new Directors for its Board of Directors (Board). As a Director, you will be directing the affairs of the Land Trust in accordance with its objectives, constitution and bylaws, applicable legislation, and approved strategic and business plans.

We welcome people from diverse communities to join our Board. ORMLT is committed to being an inclusive organization. We recognize that diversity and inclusion among our Members, volunteers, staff and Board is integral to fulfilling the Land Trust’s Mission.

We are particularly interested in finding new Board members who have some combination of the following:

  • Skills and expertise in environmental specialty areas such as environmental science, biology, ecology, stewardship;
  • Knowledge of estate, environmental or charity law;
  • Great fundraising connections and an interest in fundraising;
  • Experience in government relations and Human Resources;
  • Preferably live and/or work on the Moraine;
  • Have a particular interest in or love for the Moraine;

As a member of the Board, each Director serves in a position of confidence for the organization and is responsible for the effective governance and corporate health of the Land Trust.

What you bring:

  1. Personal commitment to the Land Trust’s vision, values, mission and to environmental protection in general.
  2. Knowledge of or interest in the Moraine ecosystem and the importance of its’ protection and conservation for long term public benefit. Living or working on or near the Moraine is an asset.
  3. Related experience with non-profit or charity Boards, committees, associations or other community groups as a member, donor, volunteer or staff.
  4. Transferable skills in one or more areas of Board service such as audit, community outreach, corporate philanthropy and sponsorship, finance, governance, group decision making, grants, management of senior staff, laws applicable to registered charities, planned giving, policy development, planning, fundraising, communications, public relations, promotion, marketing, stakeholder relations, volunteer co-ordination, risk oversight, strategic planning.
  5. Personal attributes of benefit to the Land Trust, including integrity, ability to participate effectively and constructively in group discussions and decision making, personal network of individuals and organizations that might help ORMLT, comfort with virtual communications, online document access and decision making, willingness to learn.
  6. Time and energy to contribute as a member of other committees and task groups for fundraising, special events and other Land Trust activities.
  7. Knowledge of environmental practices, Moraine ecology, land securement, land stewardship, real estate or other aspects of the Land Trust’s programs.

Each Director is expected to invest 6 to 10 hours per month in related activity of the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust.

Term of office: Directors are elected by the Membership at the Annual General Meeting. Directors serve for a three year term and may be re-elected for two full terms of office.

Where: Board meetings take place monthly, usually on the first Wednesday of the month, in the evening, at a central York Region location and/or by videoconference.

Our Commitment to You: new Directors will be provided with orientation, training and information in support of their responsibilities and will be supported by staff and other Directors in carrying out Land Trust activities. New Directors will be given an opportunity to work in areas of ability or interest and are encouraged to learn new skills relevant to their service of the Land Trust. New Directors will be part of a team that treats each other with respect while also encouraging everyone to share their insights, ideas, skills, knowledge and experience.
