Positions: Board Members
Type: board of directors / volunteer
Organization: Green Communities Canada
Location: anywhere in Canada

Green Communities Canada is looking for two volunteers who share our passion for the environment to join our national Board of Directors.

As a Director you will participate in deliberations and decisions regarding strategic direction, programming, fundraising, policy, and finance. The annual time commitment is approximately 30 hours, including an in-person retreat held each fall in Toronto. Quarterly meetings are held via web-conferencing.

We welcome applicants from all career stages (beginning, mid-career, and retirees), with particular expertise currently being sought in Human Resources, Law, and/or Revenue Development.

You care about the environment. You are concerned about climate change, the continued availability of clean water and the integrity of our ecosystems. You recognize and value our connection to our natural surroundings as an extension of our health: physical, economic and social. Importantly, you would like to be involved with a creative, positive and growing organization that addresses those values through practical and engaging solutions.

Green Communities Canada (GCC) is looking for board members who share our vision and excitement, and who recognize the opportunities and importance of this unique challenge.

Founded in 1995, we work with member organizations and partners to deliver innovative and practical community programs, with big wins for environment, health, economy, and infrastructure. Our diverse programs address home energy efficiency, green infrastructure approaches to stormwater management, active school travel, and more. Our members deliver dozens of other dynamic programs of their own.

GCC is a national non-profit, based in Peterborough, Ontario, with staff in Ottawa, Toronto, and Hamilton. We have a 12-member national board of directors, and 15 member organizations across the country.

Two Board positions are currently open. We welcome applicants at all career stages (beginning, mid-career, and retirees), with particular expertise in Human Resources, Law, and/or Revenue Development.

A Director is fully informed on organizational matters, and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of strategic direction, programming, fundraising, policy, and finance. The annual time commitment is approximately 30 hours. Directors serve for a three-year renewable term. Director nominations are ratified by GCC members at the annual AGM.

As a member of the GCC board, a director will be part of a group that is responsible for:

  • establishing policies governing the organization, its staff, and members
  • establishing long-term plans, annual budgets, reserves, and performance targets
  • monitoring financial performance, progress against goal-plans, and policy compliance
  • approving GCC membership applications
  • oversight and annual review of the Executive Director
  • exercising due diligence with respect to the responsibilities of the organization

In the fulfilment of these responsibilities, Board members are expected to:

  • attend Board meetings and participate in all Board activities and, at a minimum, attend a majority of meetings each fiscal year
  • act in the corporate interests of GCC, and work to develop collective decisions that further GCC interests
  • focus on policies and plans
  • help to maintain constructive group process and excellence in governance
  • undertake additional special responsibilities as may be defined, including serving on board committees

There are numerous benefits to joining the GCC board. They include:

  • Contributing – at the national level – to the growth of environmental sustainability, and having a positive impact on climate change
  • Helping to identify GCC’s focus and priorities at a unique time in the organization’s development
  • Expanding your personal and professional networks
  • Affecting change through an organization that has a positive, identifiable impact on the lives, homes, and communities of hundreds of thousands of Canadians.
  • Applying and advancing your skills and expertise towards a noble cause

Applications must include the following information presented in a single pdf file:

  • a short summary of your qualifications
  • a copy of your résumé
  • an indication that you understand the requirements and agree to serve
  • full contact information (telephone, mailing address, email)

Please submit your application to Mary Anna Zakula at:

Applications will be received until Monday 8 June, noon ET.

The election of Board members takes place during Green Communities Canada’s Annual General Meeting, 22 June 2020.
