Position: 2020 Wildlife Garden Internship
Type: UNPAID Full time, minimum 4 weeks
Organization: North Island Wildlife Recovery Association
Location: Errington, BC (10 minutes from Parksville)

North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre is a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

The North Island Wildlife Recovery Association (NIWRA) Intern will enjoy a unique opportunity to be part of a team supporting the work of a world class wildlife rehabilitation and education facility on beautiful Vancouver Island. The NIWRA intern will further their own growth by learning, sharing and applying new skills that enhance daily operations at the Centre.

  • Open to both international and local applicants
  • Position requires a 4-week minimum work period
  • Accommodation (rustic camper - shared) can be provided to out-of-town applicants

You are invited to apply for the opportunity to be part of a team responsible for the care of our Dan's Nook Wildlife Garden as well as assisting with related education programs.

Experience

A background which includes working with the public and experience/interest in one or more of the following areas is essential:

  • Education – formal/non-formal
  • Horticulture
  • Agriculture – especially community gardens and organic gardening
  • Ecology, botany, biology, entomology, soil science
  • Community Development
  • Other related field or work experience

Duties

Volunteers and interns are the backbone of our organization. This position works under the direction and support of NIWRA staff.

  • Work as part of a team of volunteers to help maintain and enhance the wildlife garden raised beds, pond and mini marsh
  • Welcome and engage visitors to the Wildlife Garden pointing out important features
  • Assist with grounds and garden and associated wildlife educational programs for children and adults
  • Assist with propagating native plants in our state-of-the-art greenhouse

Requirements

This rewarding position requires a mature person that works well within a team and independently and can readily adapt to changing circumstances. It is physically demanding and requires attention to detail.

  • The ability to communicate fluently in English and speak clearly and audibly to individuals and groups and to engagingly interpret prepared plant and animal information related to the Wildlife Garden
  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Must have medical insurance
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs as work is quite physical and moderately labour intensive (planting, walking, kneeling, standing, occasional moderate lifting, and dipping hands into pond water)
  • Must be able to work 5 days a week with 2 consecutive days off
  • Must be reliable and dependable
  • Ability to interact in a friendly courteous way with the public and other team members

INTERNSHIPS ARE STRICTLY VOLUNTEER POSITIONS. YOU WILL NOT BE PAID ANY MONIES OR EXPENSES, BUT YOU WILL RECEIVE ACCOMMODATIONS IF YOU ARE FROM OUT-OF-TOWN. (You may have to share accommodations with another intern)

You must supply your own food.

If you are NOT a Canadian Citizen, you must have financial means/credit card/cash in case you need to go to a medical clinic. North Island Wildlife Recovery Association will not be responsible for medical expenses.

Internships are a minimum 4 weeks or more in length.
