Position: Remote Multidisciplinary Internships on Applied Marine Conservation
Organization: Archipelagos, Institute of Marine Conservation
Location: Anywhere/ Virtual
Type: Volunteer, Fee for enrollment
During the time of the COVID-19 outbreak, if you are unable to travel, you can still gain first-hand experience in applied marine conservation on our remote program, which includes “Real Time Monitoring of Marine Ecosystems”. Students, graduates and young professionals can gain scientific, policy or communication experience working with the research team of Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation.
This exciting remote program offers an immersive opportunity to remotely aid researchers who continue to work in the field, by helping to analyze and interpret data being collected with the use of state of the art equipment. Part of this data-set can be shared in real-time, during surveys conducted in the autumn and winter of 2020.
Real-Time Monitoring of Marine Ecosystems uses a combination of:
With travel restrictions in place, the use of these innovative technologies and software programs overcome accessibility issues and provides remote interns with a modern way of monitoring marine ecosystems with minimal human disturbance. Data will be utilized to inform local conservation and environmental management activities. It will also help describe how ecosystems respond during the time of minimal human disturbance at sea during and after the time of restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Marine Ecology Research & Conservation
Marine Ecology remote interns aid the institute by helping to analyze and interpret environmental data, which can then be used to inform local conservation and environmental management activities. Projects include:
Marine Mammals Research & Conservation
Remote interns aid the team on site through photo identification activities, population structure analysis and map creation using GIS, and live stream drone surveys. Projects focus on:
Interns who want to gain exposure to real-world applications of the use of environmental law, have the unique opportunity to join a marine conservation effort and work alongside environmental researchers in key conservation projects. This material will be used to combat environmental crimes or to develop environmental management and conservation strategies.
Mixed Media for Environmental Conservation
If you have a background in media and passion for the protection of nature, this unique opportunity enables remote interns to gain experience with a highly respected marine conservation effort. Assist researchers to communicate their findings and engage the public on key environmental protection issues, while gaining exposure to real-world applications of media. Interns can design infographics, posters, animations, scientific illustrations and other related material to help raise awareness of environmental challenges and engage others to take action for the protection of our seas.
At least one year of relevant college/university study in biology, environmental sciences, sustainability, or a related field.
High School Students aged 16+ may be accepted, depending on the strength of their application.
Costs & Additional Information
- For 100 hrs, either 3 weeks full-time or 5 weeks part-time, the fee is 872 euro.

Remote internships are designed to include as much as possible the use of real-time transmission of video from underwater cameras and drones that are used for the purposes of our surveys, with the aim to engage and inspire interns in marine conservation issues, even though they may not be able to join us on-site this summer.
Remote interns who register before December 2020, are offered the opportunity to join and work with the Archipelagos research team for 1 month at any time in the coming years with all local costs covered (accommodation & board, participation in the research activities and research trips etc - excluding flights to Greece), so that they can take part in the project in which they have worked on remotely.
Internship fees may be covered by Erasmus or other equivalent grants.
