Maple Syrup Volunteer Opportunities at Black Creek Community Farm

Positions: Maple Syrup Volunteers

Location: Black Creek / near York University, Toronto, Ontario

Volunteer Training and tree tapping - Saturday March 9th 2019 2:00pm - 5:00pm

Learn the basics about Maple syrup making and how to tap trees to collect maple sap. Training recommended (required for a few positions if volunteer doesn't posses previous knowledge/experience with Maple Syrup) for Maple sap boiling volunteers and Maple Syrup Day Volunteers. Please apply for another role as well when applying for the training.

Maple Sap harvesting and boiling - Thursday March 14th 2019 10am - 1pm

Help with maple harvesting and boiling. May require lifting buckets full of sap, handling hot pans and fire.

Maple Syrup Day Volunteer Opportunities - Saturday March 23 2019

  • Hot drinks table helper 9:00am - 2:00pm: Help prepare and serve coffee and tea before and during event. Replenish drinks and keep table tidy.
  • Food serving helper 9:30am - 2:30pm: Assist food (pancakes and/or waffles) prepping and serving throughout the event.
  • Registration table 9:30am - 2:30pm: Welcome and register visitors. Count number of visitors with clicker. Give hand outs.
  • Kids activity helper 9:30am - 2:30pm: Assist with kids activity
  • Maple Tree ID station 9:30am - 2:30pm: Help staff facilitate a station about basic Maple Tree Identification. Previous knowledge/experience desired (please attend the March 09 training).
  • Maple Taffy helper 9:30am - 2:30pm: Help prepare and serve maple taffy.
  • Fire keeper and syrup boiling demo (experience desired) - 9:30am - 2:30pm: Assist staff in keeping the fire for sap boiling demo and boiled sap tasting, informing visitors. Experience and/or training (on March 9th, apply for the training by signing up for the "Volunteer Training" shift) desirable.
  • Floater (Should be fairly comfortable in any of the other positions) and event tear down 10:00am - 3:00pm: Replace volunteers or staff for breaks as needed or any extra tasks as they appear. Help with event tear down, returning equipment to their place and cleaning as needed.
