Position: Lifelines Magazine Editorial Director
Toronto Vegetarian Association
Location: Toronto, Ontario

Description: Do you have experience editing or co-editing a newspaper/publication? Are you great at leading and communicating with a team? Do you want to volunteer your skills for a great cause?

The Toronto Vegetarian Association (TVA) is looking for a volunteer Lifelines Editorial Director to oversee the creation and management of the TVA’s quarterly magazine and to support strategic goal-setting of the magazine with the Executive Director. They will also manage a group of volunteers to achieve those goals.

Lifelines is a magazine of the Toronto Vegetarian Association published quarterly, and given to TVA members and beyond. It is led and run by volunteers to keep members connected and in the know about what’s going on at TVA and the plant-based movement as a whole, and to engage new members.


  • Develop an annual editorial plan with the Executive Director and key staff members and suggest changes as trends emerge
  • Manage the annual deadline schedule and rough content plan for Lifelines each year
  • Assign, collect and edit/review Lifelines content as per the content plan while rotating columns/topics based on the Lifelines mandate and TVA’s strategic plan and mission
  • Lead and manage a team of volunteer writers and editors on a quarterly basis over the entire year
  • Work closely with TVA staff and Lifelines graphic designer to ensure the issue is completed with ads and content by the quarterly print deadline
  • Conduct an annual editorial meeting with all Lifelines volunteers
  • Review the editorial goals of Lifelines with the Executive Director as overall organizational goals change
  • Provide feedback on the financial goals for the publication and work within those boundaries
  • Utiliize google docs, dropbox and other sharing tools to manage the work of the content-creators and the overall plan of the publication


  • Previous experience being the editor or co-editor of a publication is an asset
  • Familiarity with TVA’s mission, vision, values and programs
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent communication and team-building skills to work with TVA staff and volunteers
  • Team leadership or volunteer management experience is an asset
  • Initial time commitment of 5-10 hours for orientation and planning
  • Regular commitment 20-30 hours every quarter moving forward

Accountabilities and Reporting Relationship

The Lifelines Editorial Director reports to the Executive Director of the Toronto Vegetarian Association for performance against the editorial plan of Lifelines and meeting its annual goals. The Executive Director is accountable for ensuring that content, quality, direction and planning requirements are met. This relationship will be supported by a quarterly planning and review meeting to ensure both the effectiveness and efficiency of the publication process.

Training and orientation will be provided for the new editor to take over the roles and responsibilities.
