The Volunteer’s Role

In Peru, Cuso International works to reduce poverty by creating sustainable livelihoods, and combat inequality by empowering people and communities. We build trusted partnerships with a variety of local partners, including non-governmental organizations, governments, social enterprises and cooperatives.

Urban agriculture (UA) is defined as the growing, processing, and distribution of food and other products through plant cultivation and seldom raising livestock within and around cities. Urban and peri-urban agriculture is re-emerging worldwide as a strategy to simultaneously address and attenuate a diverse array of interrelated urban issues, especially those related to food, health, environment and income generation. The most striking feature of UA, which distinguishes it from rural agriculture, is that it is embedded in and interacts with the urban economic and ecological system. In Lima, UA has the potential to:

  1. Increase urban poor household cash income (i.e. by selling or trading produce)
  2. Increase urban poor household savings (i.e. urban producers can save income, as the household limits its need to purchase food)
  3. Improve access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food by the urban poor through own-production or exchange

Along with our local partners in Lima, we are promoting community-based processes to improve the quality of products through a local certification system to guarantee the organic and social standards of the urban agriculture producers´ associations.

We are implementing a unique urban participative certification system. This farmer-centric and bottom-up approach to organic quality assurance is based on the participative definition of voluntary standards for organic practice, as well as gender equality, solidarity-based economy and social justice. Evaluation committees have been established to verify that urban producers are consistently meeting the standards.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Provide quality assurance and technical support to manage the new community-based certification system.
  • Support the creation, training and coordination of Evaluation Committees.
  • Provide support to urban producers´ groups in the process of certification.
  • Promote the certification among new urban producers´ groups.
