Not Far From The Tree Seeking New Steering Committee Members: Steering Committee Chair, Fundraising & Communications Sub-Committee Chair, and General Members

Not Far From The Tree is an award-winning Toronto-based fruit picking project inspired by three things: the spirit of sharing, the desire to give back to our community, and a passion for environmentally sustainable living. We bring together volunteers and homeowners to pick fruit found in the city’s backyards, and we share it with each other and those in need.

As a project of Tides Canada, Not Far From The Tree is governed by a Steering Committee with responsibility for strategic direction, as well as overseeing fundraising, communications, operations, programming and finances. The Steering Committee also manages the Project Director’s performance. Steering Committee members are volunteers and invest about 5 to 7 hours each month.

We are seeking new members for the following roles:

  1. Steering Committee Chair

  2. Fundraising & Communications Sub-Committee Chair

  3. General Members

Please find all job descriptions for each position below.

Steering Committee Chair

The role of Steering Committee Chair is a golden opportunity for a leader who is passionate about the success and impact of Not Far From the Tree. The ideal candidate has demonstrated leadership success in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. S/he has a commitment to and understanding of NFFTT’s mission, as well as savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Leadership, governance, and oversight of all Steering Committee activities

  • Planning, presiding over, and facilitating monthly Steering Committee meetings

  • Acting as a trusted advisor to the Project Director as s/he develops and implements Not Far From the Tree’s strategic plan

  • Developing and managing relationships, and communicating with funders, partners, and other stakeholders

  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by NFFTT for evaluating its impact

  • Acting as an ambassador for the organization

  • Participate in, and support, Strategy Planning for the project.

Fundraising & Communications Sub-Committee Chair

The ideal candidate for the Fundraising and Communications Sub-Committee Chair will have expertise in fundraising, marketing and/or communications, as well as a strong professional network, and experience with social enterprise and innovation. A particular competency in corporate partnerships is an asset, as is professional experience and/or existing networks in Toronto’s social service sector, with an emphasis on food security issues.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Work with the Project Director to establish targets and milestones for revenue generation via diversified channels, and for marketing and communications activity and outcomes.

  • Support the Project Director in managing fundraising and communications processes and reporting; activate your network to create opportunities for new relationships and interactions where needed.

  • Provide regular updates to the Steering Committee about the project’s fundraising and communications status and potential issues.

General Members

Finally, we are welcoming applications from those interested in being a General Member of the Steering Committee. General Members of the SC are unassigned to any specific sub-committee, but share the common responsibilities of all members: that is, to participate in setting the strategic direction of the Project, overseeing and evaluating all areas of NFFTT`s work, and helping to manage the Project Director`s performance.

If you love our city, share our mission and have the experience we are looking for, we'd love to hear from you! Please send your resume and cover letter to: by May 25th, 2018, and tell us what makes you the ideal candidate.
