Wildlife Garden Student Internship 
(Full-time, unpaid position)

Position: Wildlife Garden Student Internship
Organization: North Island Wildlife Recovery Association
Location: Errington - near Parksville, Vancouver Island BC

You are invited to apply for the opportunity to be part of a team responsible for the care of our Dan's Nook Wildlife Garden as well as assisting with related education programs. Responsibilities include caring for native and other wildlife friendly garden plants and plants in our new greenhouse.


A background which includes working with the public (clubs, schools, teaching, 4H, sales, food server, etc.) and experience/interest in one or more of the following areas is essential:

  • Education – formal/non-formal
  • Horticulture
  • Agriculture – especially community gardens and organic gardening
  • Ecology, botany, biology, entomology, soil science
  • Recreation & Leisure
  • Community Development
  • Other related field or work experience


  • Work as part of a team of volunteers to help maintain and enhance the new wildlife garden raised beds, pond and mini-marsh
  • Welcome and engage visitors to the Wildlife Garden pointing out important features
  • Assist with garden and associated wildlife educational programs for children and adults
  • Assist with propagating native plants in our new 15 x 17' state-of-the-art greenhouse
  • There may be an opportunity to help with establishment of native and medicinal plants


  • Physical activity and stamina sufficient for planting, walking, kneeling, standing, occasional moderate lifting, and dipping hands into pond water
  • The ability to speak clearly and audibly to individuals and groups and to engagingly interpret prepared plant and animal information related to the Wildlife Garden
  • Ability to interact in a friendly courteous way with the public and other team members
  • 5-day week with 2 days off.


  • The intern will enjoy a unique opportunity to be part of a team supporting the work of a world class wildlife rehabilitation and education facility on beautiful Vancouver Island
  • The intern will work with direction from Dr. Lynne Brookes, Ph.D., an educator and naturalist who has taught natural sciences nationally and internationally, developed wildlife friendly garden programs and courses, and been involved with wildlife rehabilitation for twenty years and other members of the Wildlife Garden and pond team.
  • There will be opportunities to learn and to apply skills related to wildlife gardening and to assist in teaching others about exciting aspects of nature friendly gardening and ponds
  • Personal satisfaction from encouraging and enabling and people to garden with wildlife needs in mind and their joy of discovering all the life that comes with it
  • Opportunities to visit various fascinating areas in the area guided by Wildlife Garden team members and others
  • Private housing will be provided at the facility along with transport to obtain supplies, go to appointments, etc.
  • Letter(s) of reference will be written upon request to further your career
