Wildlife Habitat Canada is seeking dynamic & motivated volunteers to join its Board of Directors

If you share a conservation ethic that recognizes the value of wildlife habitats that are abundant, rich and support biodiversity, we want to hear from you!

Who are we?

Wildlife Habitat Canada is a forward-looking organization that seeks a broad range of experience, age, gender, cultural backgrounds and diversity on our Board of Directors.

Our mission is to conserve wildlife habitat in Canada through wise conservation investments.

We are a non-profit, charitable conservation organization that promotes the importance of wildlife habitat conservation and provides financial support for habitat conservation projects throughout Canada. These projects help to safeguard important ecosystems and countless wild species.

  • Funds from the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp support habitat conservation, restoration and/or enhancement or stewardship projects with a focus on wetlands, waterfowl and migratory game birds.
  • The Land Trusts Conservation Fund, under the Natural Heritage Conservation Program, provides funding for Canadian charity land trusts to secure private lands and private interests in lands, to contribute towards Canada Target 1 goals and the protection of habitat for species at risk.
  • The Community Conservation Action Program (CCAP) is a new small grants pilot program. The CCAP supports small(er) organizations in making conservation achievements within their community, through projects that connect Canadians with nature, engage youth in conservation, or provide educational conservation programming.

Our Board of Directors

The role of our Board of Directors is to provide governance to the organization, identify and monitor strategic priorities and set policies.

While WHC follows a policy of communicating about its federally funded programs in both official languages, the business of the Board of Directors is conducted in English.

WHC values the different perspectives, knowledge, skills and interests that each Director brings to the Board.

We are currently recruiting 2-3 volunteers to join the Board of Directors in June 2022. Directors are generally elected for an initial three-year term and may be eligible for re-election for a consecutive two-year term.

Note: WHC maintains liability insurance coverage for all WHC Directors.

We are seeking individuals with backgrounds that complement our existing Directors, specifically:

  • expertise and knowledge of habitat conservation in Québec;
  • Indigenous ecological and conservation perspectives;
  • expertise related to government conservation priorities (carbon and climate change, etc.) and social trends in programs, funding and policy development;
  • expertise in education and connecting people with nature;
  • a strong connection to the Canadian waterfowl hunting community.

Who are you?

You have a passion for conservation and believe in the sustainable use of natural resources.

We welcome expressions of interest from candidates who are:

  • over 18 years old;
  • able to serve as a corporate director;
  • committed to working in a constructive team environment that is free of discrimination and harassment; and,
  • supportive of our mission statement.

Previous Board experience is not essential, but would be considered an asset.

In addition to the backgrounds we’re seeking, as outlined above, be sure to let us know in your cover letter if you have any knowledge or expertise in the following areas:

  • working for a national non-government conservation organization;
  • strategic planning;
  • fundraising / philanthropy;
  • the business of wildlife art / connecting people to nature through art.

Are you up for the challenge?

Our Board meets in person twice annually (web conference during the COVID-19 pandemic) and by web conference or teleconference several times a year. Members are asked to participate on one of the Board’s two Committees (Nominating Committee or Finance and Audit Committee).

We estimate that a minimum time commitment of 100 hours/year (approximately 8 hours/month) is required to participate on the Board.
