Citizen Scientist Volunteers

Position: Citizen Science Volunteer
Organization: Toronto and Region Conservation
Location: Toronto/GTA, Ontario


Assist with the delivery of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority’s (TRCA) Young Tree and Shrub Monitoring and Maintenance Program on select weekdays during the months of May through August 2019 and select weekends in June and July. Volunteers will collect tree health data of young native plants and conduct site maintenance on community-based restoration sites. Sites are located throughout the Greater Toronto Area and across the TRCA’s jurisdiction. Successful candidates must attend a volunteer training session and commit to volunteering for a minimum of 5 monitoring days during the season. Transportation pick up flexible.


  • Date: Saturday March 23, 2019
  • Time: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
  • Location: Kortright Centre for Conservation - 9550 Pine Valley Drive, Woodbridge, Ontario


  • Environmental knowledge with a focus on local wildlife, native plants and environmental conservation an asset;
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a team environment;
  • Experience with field data collection an asset;
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a physically demanding environment;
  • Interest in nature interpretation;
  • Interest in environmental monitoring;
  • Interest in environmental restoration:
  • Familiarity with TRCA and its programs is an asset;
  • Access to a personal vehicle for travel or ability to meet at 101 Exchange or Highway 407 TTC stop for 7:30am.


Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

  1. Participate in the indoor training session on Wednesday, April 24th, 2019 from 6 – 8pm;
  2. Participate in site safety orientations before each monitoring day;
  3. Assist with gathering scientific data and measurements on newly planted native plants;
  4. Assist with site maintenance including invasive species removal, watering, tree guard removal, managing weed competition, monitoring and maintaining habitats, garbage clean up;
  5. Assist with packing up tables, tents and other event equipment;
  6. Adhere to all TRCA safety policies and procedures;
  7. Participate at a minimum of 5 days throughout this season.
