VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Role: Western Chorus Frog Monitors
Organization: Blazing Star Environmental
Location: Western Chorus Frog range in Ontario (see map below)

Type: Volunteer
Number of vacancies: Unlimited
Duration: March – May 2021 (2-3 week time period, depending when chorus frogs start calling,  minimum 2-hour commitment).

Western chorus frogs will soon be calling, and we are calling on YOU!

The western chorus frog (WCF) is designated as a threatened species in Canada and has experienced recent localized population declines.

In response, Blazing Star Environmental, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Trent University developed a long-term, range wide monitoring program for the WCF. The purpose of this program is to collect data that will inform recovery actions and allow the conservation community to quickly detect and respond to WCF range declines over time. This program  will launch as soon as WCF begin calling in early spring 2021!

You can help! The success of this program is reliant on individuals and organizations that are willing to  donate their time to complete short daytime surveys during the chorus frog calling season. Our team at  Blazing Star Environmental is small and unable to cover the entire species range in the short WCF calling  period.

As a volunteer, you will pick your preferred number of sites and your preferred travel distance. Blazing Star Environmental staff will provide training materials, the survey protocol, and site selection assistance, if needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct 5-minute auditory surveys during the day at each of your assigned/selected sites following the survey protocol
  • Record and submit survey data to Blazing Star Environmental at the end of the chorus frog calling  season

Qualifications:

  • Located in the western chorus frog range in Ontario
  • Access to a vehicle or mode of transportation to get to sites
  • Ability to identify early-season frogs by sound, training materials will be provided to volunteers
  • Adequate note-taking skills, attention to detail, ability to follow survey protocol
  • Experience conducting frog call surveys is an asset, but not required
