Position: TreeMobile Organizing Team Members
Organization: Transition Toronto
Location: Toronto, Ontario

TreeMobile is is a Transition Toronto project that delivers food-bearing trees and perennials to peoples’ yards, and offers planting services. TreeMobile is not-for-profit and driven by a volunteer project team and volunteer planters. The project increases local food resilience and sustainability, generates healthy food close to where people live, and delivers a host of environmental benefits, including addressing climate change. TreeMobile has been featured on CTV, CBC, and in other media. More details on the project have been discussed on the Food Garden Life podcast.

TreeMobile requires new members for its core project delivery team. Project delivery team member duties can include development of strategic objectives and planning, coordination and logistics, data processing and reporting, volunteer coordination, communications, IT support, project process improvement, marketing, social media work, liaising with other allied neighbourhood groups, and other tasks required to deliver the project. No single project delivery team will be responsible for all of these areas of the project, but work is required in all of these areas and more, and the division of labour would be negotiated by the delivery team members.

Applicants should have experience in some of the areas of work listed above, and applications should highlight which areas are of interest to the applicant. Experience with and commitment to delivery of community projects is required. TreeMobile is a seasonal project that occurs annually and the hope is that project team members will stay with the project for multiple years so that experience can be developed and passed on to other team members.

The role may also include coordinating with other TreeMobile communities (Guelph, Hamilton, Burlington, and others), but no travel outside of Toronto will be required. Depending on duties, applicants may not need to reside in Toronto.

TreeMobile is a project where the managers get their hands dirty (if possible). Being on the organizing team means being responsible not just for high-level strategy and management, but can also include specific resolving customer issues and, of course, planting trees (if circumstances allow).

  • 3 hours of introductions to the project and the team, of briefing on duties, and familiarization with the existing project tools
  • 3-4 hours per week from February to end of April of duties delivered based on the areas of responsibility adopted (see “duties can include” list, above).
  • Coordination with other team members and staying in touch with the plans of the wider team

  • Effective marketing of the TreeMobile project, including expansion of options for low-income neighbourhoods to participate in TreeMobile
  • Smooth project operation and delivery
  • Effective volunteer organization
  • Team-building

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Ability to manage communications with team members and customers in a professional manner
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Attention to detail and ability to work in a well-organized and systemic manner
  • Commitment to project success
  • Reliability in completing tasks accepted
  • Commitment to, and respect for, diversity
