Youth Challenge International’s Innovate MY Future program offers Canadian youth in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area the opportunity to design youth-led projects addressing local climate issues and make a real difference in their communities.

Addressing climate change requires creative, local solutions and social innovation. At Youth Challenge International (YCI), we know that youth are powerful agents of change, driven to shape their communities, cities and futures.

The Innovate MY Future program inspires young people to be engaged citizens, climate leaders and innovators who effectively respond to local climate change issues and needs, building resilient communities alongside our partners.

Our world and realities are rapidly changing – now more than ever, we need actionable and creative solutions to curb climate change and continue climate action momentum, creating a #betterthannormal future.

Position: “Climate Action Catalyst"

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity to engage in youth climate action in your community?

Join Youth Challenge International’s (YCI) Innovate MY Future program as a Climate Action Catalyst team member to work alongside a team of fellow passionate peers to take local climate action together. You will receive training & support from YCI to design and implement a climate action project in your community, gaining resume-building skills and experience along the way.

Our network of Climate Action Catalysts will gain exclusive access to grant funding and prizes, as well as the opportunity to receive funding for accessibility support to address potential barriers to participation (e.x. Transportation stipends, technology needs).

What you’ll do:

  • Join the Innovate MY Future Climate Action Catalyst network: You’ll join YCI’s network of 100+ like-minded Climate Action Catalysts across the GTHA to learn from, collaborate with and support each other.
  • Access exclusive learning and support resources: You’ll participate in our unique climate action and design-thinking trainings and workshops and be eligible for grant funding, awards and prizes.
  • Collaborate with community leaders and climate experts: Your team will be matched with a partner organization who will pose a local climate issue for your project to address and provide ongoing mentorship throughout the program. As Team Lead, you’ll be the main liaison for your team with all key stakeholders.
  • Take tangible action on climate change: You’ll lead a local team of Climate Action Catalysts to design, plan and execute a climate action project that addresses climate issues facing your community now.
  • Jumpstart your career: Climate Action Catalysts build market-ready skills and network with influential partners, municipalities and local youth throughout your experience

You’ll fit right in if you:

  • Are dedicated and dependable with availability on weeknights and periodic weekends to actively volunteer with a local team through virtual platforms (and in-person meetings as social distancing measures permit).
  • Have strong digital savviness and virtual collaboration skills with an interest in deepening these skills.
  • Are curious about systems change, design-thinking and climate action, and you’re hungry to learn more about how you can make a positive impact in your community.
  • Are dedicated and dependable with availability on weeknights and periodic weekends to actively volunteer with a local team through virtual platforms (and in-person meetings as social distancing measures permit).
  • Possess a passion for climate action and desire to learn from local experts on climate change policy development, advocacy and action planning.
  • Are a highly organized and motivated self-starter with experience and/or strong interest in civic engagement on social and/or environmental issues.
  • Have strong attention to detail, organizational planning, time management and multi-tasking abilities and desire to further enhance these skills.
  • Have strong digital savviness and virtual collaboration skills with an interest in deepening these skills.
  • Are able to work well with a team and possess strong interpersonal skills.

The details & time commitment:

  • Approximately 4 hours of volunteer time each week from July to February to attend trainings and coaching meetings and to collaborate with YCI, your local partner and your team. Trainings typically take place on Tuesday evenings.
  • The program will run virtually for the foreseeable future, with the potential of some in-person activities in the fall and winter.


  • You're 16-24 years old.
  • You live in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA) and are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • You want to build skills and become a climate action leader in your community.
  • You can commit to:

    • Volunteering approx. 4 hours per week from August - February and attend bi-weekly virtual trainings and meetings.
    • Completing a climate action project in collaboration with a team and attend a final event in February 2021 in downtown Toronto.
