Position: Animal Care Coordinator
Organization: Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre
Location: Midland, north of Orillia and Barrie
Region: Huronia / Georgian Bay / Simcoe County / Central Ontario

Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is located in Midland Ontario and is managed by the Friends of Wye Marsh Inc., a not-for-profit charitable organization. The Centre is open 362 days a year and provides school and public programs for over 30,000 visitors annually and houses both birds of prey and reptiles. Friends of Wye Marsh Inc. is governed by both federal and provincial regulations for all activities and land use.

Animal care co-ordinator

The successful applicant will provide animal care for the captive wildlife at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre and supervision of the Animal Care Technician and Animal Care volunteers. This position involves working outside in varying weather conditions for several hours per day. This is a permanent position for a minimum of thirty-two hours per week, eight hours per day from Monday to Thursday inclusive, with the potential for additional shifts during evenings and weekends as required.

  • Report to the Executive Director
  • Overcall care and feeding of captive birds of prey and reptiles
  • Maintain proper records in accordance with federal and provincial requirements
  • Conduct educational and public programs as they relate to the captive animals
  • Prepare, monitor, and report against an annual budget for the Animal Care Department
  • Supervise the Animal Care Technician and Animal Care volunteers to ensure compliance with Wye Marsh policies and procedures and general labour standards
  • Ensure health and safety policies and procedures are upheld at all times
  • Uphold the Wye Marsh mission statement and objectives at all times
  • Provide excellent customer service


  • Preference will be given to individuals who can demonstrate enthusiasm and knowledge of caring for turtles, snakes, and birds of prey
  • Proven initiative and self-motivated
  • Attention to detail is crucial for this position
  • Enjoy working with members of the public in an outdoor setting
  • Experience with public speaking is an asset
  • Skilled team player


  • Experience in a related field
  • Post-secondary education or training from a recognized organization in the care of captive wildlife
  • Ability to work some evenings or weekends
  • Possession of current first-aid/CPR certification an asset
  • Valid Class G driver’s license
  • Bilingual (French/English) is an asset
  • Employment conditional on receipt of Police Criminal Records Check
