Position: Homeschool Helper
Type: work exchange with a cabin, food sharing, monthly stipend, more (see below)
Organization: The Hitching Post
Location: Atlin Road, south of Whitehorse, Yukon

Seeking a person (or couple) that is passionate about sustainable living and wanting to live an “off the-grid-in-the-wilderness” lifestyle. We own a homestead off the Atlin Lake halfway down the Atlin road. Our homestead has a house with solar power, 3 guest cabins, a barn, a greenhouse, a farrier cabin, and a dock into the river. It is a very special and beautiful land to us, filled with countless medicinal plants and wildflowers. We enjoy an upfront view of the mountain, river, and lake. We are looking for a person (or couple) to come and live and work with us to build a long term vision towards a sustainable eco-village, and a path towards a conscious humanity. If you have children – that’s a bonus!

We would ask one person be responsible for:

  • Organizing and executing our nature-art-science based Homeschool curriculum for 2 school age children. This curriculum is based in Bioregionalism and Non-Violent Communication. It highly emphasizes indigenous cultures, language, music, fine art, performance arts, and science, science, science.
  • Taking the children to the Yukon Home Education Society Events and other community based learning trips.
  • Extra tutoring for one child that has difficulty learninig.
  • Providing the children with big nature and art based projects and play to engage in when school is not in session.
  • Helping the children to keep their learning and living space clean and organized.
  • Helping with the logistical organization of a Daughters of Tradition group, which is a group for aboriginal youth focused on teaching indigenous models of wellness.
  • Help in the garden – that’s something we all do!

If this is you, you probably have some of the following skills:

  • Experience working with children
  • A background in teaching or psychology or a resume that reflects a person who valued their education
  • Experience in the wilderness either living or working
  • Amazing communication skills
  • A deep willingness to always be growing and learning
  • A sober and healthy lifestyle

30 hours a week in exchange for a cabin, and food sharing at the homestead, which we hope will cover 75% of our food supply this year, plus $500 per month stipend. Please note we live in a remote wilderness location. Our main house has services, but the cabins only have wood heat, with propane, stove, refrigerator, and propane lamps. They do not have electricity. We are located 1 hr and 15 min. from Whitehorse and 40 minutes from Atlin.
