VOLUNTEER / PAID POSITION

Position: Dog Handler/Cleaner
Type: paid & volunteer position with housing, more (details below)
Organization: Arctic Chalet
Location: Inuvik, Northwest Territories

The Arctic Chalet is a beautifully landscaped eco-friendly, non-smoking tourist establishment located in the Canadian Arctic on the outskirts of Inuvik, Northwest Territories. We provide tourists with beautiful cabin accommodations and adventure tours above the Arctic circle. We currently have a position open that we need to fill immediately or asap.  We are looking for healthy, PHYSICALLY FIT volunteer workers who are passionate about dogs and would enjoy living and working with us in the Arctic for this winter dog sledding season or perhaps longer.

Right now we have openings for January, February, March and April.  We especially need help in January.  Winter tour season extends until end of April and is the best time to enjoy the Arctic.

A stipend of $500 per month may be offered to volunteers staying a minimum of 4 months depending on qualifications.  We will also be hiring staff with a $1200/month salary for a one-year term starting in May.  Summer positions will also be available.

Benefits
To live and work in the Arctic is a wonderful adventure and for many has been an experience of a lifetime.  Staff will have the chance to attend cultural events and participate in some of our adventure tours and will also travel to other Arctic communities via the famous ice roads or by air in the summer.  Staff can enjoy campfires together, canoeing, skiing and skijoring and hiking right from the property.  We have a nice social network here with staff who are friendly and get along well with each other.

Our employees/volunteers will have the opportunity to learn some skills that are unique to cold northern climates such as learning to drive snowmobiles, vehicles on ice roads and ATV 4-wheelers in summer.  Best of all,  they get lots of experience driving dog teams both in summer and in winter and skiers can learn how to skijor with our huskies.  We try to give everyone the best possible northern experience!

The Dogs & Kennel Work
Our White Huskies are a unique white, blue-eyed Arctic husky breed and are beautiful, intelligent, strong and have wonderful dispositions. There are 33 adults currently living in our kennel and 6 puppies - all in need of many hugs and kisses!  These dogs are very well socialized and interact beautifully with people.   Staff will also help raise and take care of our puppies - a big bonus this winter!  The experience to be gained here working  with our huskies is amazing!

Our dogs live in a new kennel complex that makes working there very efficient and is easy to keep clean.  Staff share the responsibility of taking care of our huskies on a daily basis.   We also take on boarding dogs for people in the community.  Kennel duties include feeding, watering, cleaning pens and shovelling snow.  Staff will also help with exercising, training the dogs individually and in teams.

In summer we exercise the dogs using 4-wheeler ATVs which sometimes includes taking tourists along for a short tour.  In winter we use dog sleds for training runs and dog sled tours.  Our staff help prepare guests for their tour and provide support on snowmobiles during the tours.

Room and Board & WIFI
We will provide free housing which includes towels, bedding & utilities. Staff members purchase their own groceries and cook for themselves in a shared staff kitchen stocked with dishes and cookware & have free access to our laundry facility. (We usually have a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetation staff.)  They also receive a limited amount of wireless internet each day - but not enough to Skype.  Sorry!  Internet is expensive in the north.

Requirements
As we live in a natural environment close to nature we would like to find staff who love the out-of-doors and have a healthy natural-looking physical appearance.  Employees should practice good hygiene and be clean, neat and tidy, non-smoking, non-drinking and drug-free with no visible tattoos, body piercings or radical hair styles.   A staff contract/agreement must be signed before starting work.

Our volunteers should be mature, good team players, have a friendly personality, radiate  a positive attitude  and must be flexible with work and schedules.  We run a split schedule between yard work, cleaning guest rooms, doing other misc. jobs and working at the dog kennels.

If you have some experience with animals or dogs in particular and can relate well to them, have a spirit of adventure, love nature and being outside and are ambitious, this volunteer opportunity may be perfect for you!

Applicants should have a valid Canadien work permit and be willing to complete a criminal record’s check with the RCMP upon arrival.
