Our small family market garden/farm. It rests on a bluff overlooking the Ottawa river in the village of Waltham Quebec. Its quite picturesque, with 20 acres of heirloom crops, an orchard and our beloved chickens free ranging the property.
The granite mountain and the Ottawa River create a unique micro ecosystem allowing a wide variety of crops to grow. All of our vegetables are heirloom varieties. These are the varieties that are tried and true, they have the flavour that you remember having out of grandma's garden and are typically naturally more disease resistant than the more modern scientifically developed varieties. We use natural and organic growing methods but also integrate modern greenhouse techniques such as tomato clips, drip irrigation and raised beds. This allows for healthier weed free plants with minimal use of chemicals. We do not specialise in only one crop, which allows us to experiment with natures bounty.
Our crops include asparagus, spring onions, peas, lettuce, kale, currants, blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, butter beans, zucchini, cabbage, melons, apples, plums, pears, squash and potatoes.
We sell most of our produce at our farm stand and through our weekly 'good food baskets' CSA program. But we also use our produce to home can jams, jellies, pickles preserves and gourmet sauces. Don't knock Raspberry Jalapeno jam until you try it!
We are looking for a person or a couple that would be interested in spending some time working on the farm, sharing in the harvest and learning along the way. We ask that you commit to at least a week, but would prefer those who are interested in staying longer.
The work hours are generally 9-4, with the possibility of some longer days. While some work continues on the weekends, you are free to join in or take some time to explore some of what the Ottawa valley has to offer. The job includes all of the usual gardening tasks. Planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting, assisting with weekly basket preparation, feeding the chickens, collecting eggs, record keeping, etc. We also do all the preserving for the farm, and you are welcome to take part in that process as well.
We are able to provide a large two room tent, both an outdoor shower (that overlooks the Ottawa River) and an indoor shower, home cooked meals using much of our own produce and a small stipend.
