Position: Water Leaders & Special Projects Coordinator
Organization: POLIS Water Sustainability Project (WSP)
Location: Preference will be given to candidates based in Victoria or on Vancouver Island (some remote work possible but in-office time required, following public health guidelines).

Employment Type: This is an initial full-time 1-year term position (subject to a 6-month probation period), with opportunities to extend. Flexible hours are possible.
Salary range: $50,0000-$60,000 (with increase post-probation and initial review) plus benefits

About the Opportunity

The POLIS Water Sustainability Project is seeking a full-time Water Leaders & Special Projects Coordinator to join our team at the University of Victoria. The successful candidate will contribute to POLIS’ core areas of research, events, and programs; lead the coordination of a growing and diverse water leaders network; and provide support to POLIS and partners on a variety of leading-edge BC and national water initiatives.

The Coordinator role carries with it significant growth potential, mentorship and training support, and many opportunities to develop competencies in strategic thinking, policy and analysis, research, and leadership. The Coordinator will be part of progressive, nimble, and supportive team at POLIS and within the broader community at the University of Victoria Centre for Global Studies.

Core responsibilities include:

Coordinating the Water Leaders Network: The BC water leaders network is a dynamic affiliation of groups and individuals working on water in the province and has an influential role in shaping BC water strategies, policy, and priorities. The Coordinator will be responsible for organizing ongoing water leaders meetings and supporting network connections, communications, and growth. This includes logistics and content for regular meetings and workshops, communicating with participants and resource guests, and preparing supporting materials (e.g., surveys, summaries, Briefs). The Coordinator will also support scoping (e.g., funding, partnerships, & program development) for an emerging BC Freshwater Internship Program.

Researching and Synthesizing: The Coordinator will provide research support on ongoing and emerging research areas, including: local government & watershed governance; water issues hotspot mapping; and developing materials to contribute to the anticipated provincial Watershed Security Strategy and fund (and related policies) and federal Canada Water Agency public engagement. The Coordinator will also support research on other projects on an as-needed basis as part of a research team.

Providing General Support on Special Projects and Communications: The Coordinator will support a range of general project activities including:

  • Assisting with quarterly e-newsletter (Mailchimp); the Creating a Blue Dialogue Webinar Series; and digital communications for events/meetings.
  • Organizing and supporting workshops/meetings (notetaking, coordinating as needed).
  • Coordinating the design and editing for major reports and briefs.
  • Preparing presentation slides and making community and conference presentations.
  • Participating in POLIS and Centre for Global Studies activities and events

Other duties as assigned.

Key Assets for Candidates

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, growth-oriented candidate with excellent team and communication skills and an interest in water issues, policy innovation, and local water priorities in BC. The successful candidate will be committed to working in a team environment, while also highly self-motivated and able to work independently. Key experience and competencies for this position include:

  • Clear communication and effective writing
  • Organization and attention to detail
  • Strong research and synthesis skills
  • Experience organizing meetings, workshops, and conferences
  • Skilled communicator, connector, facilitator – the ability to build strong networks and facilitate connections between different organizations
  • E-literacy: excellent e-skills, including office technology and related software (e.g. digital conferencing, project management, Microsoft and Google Suite programs)
  • Ability to learn from and support diverse perspectives and ways of knowing and knowledge
  • Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Environmental Studies, Geography or related field; or equivalent combination of experience.

The position will be co-supervised by the POLIS WSP Director/CFGS Associate Director and the Water Law/Policy Researcher & Program Manager.
