The Friends of Allan Gardens is a registered not-for-profit organization composed of neighbours, civic leaders, city builders, and other volunteers who advocate for the heritage, horticulture, and community uses of one of Toronto’s oldest designed parks. Allan Gardens, located at the north end of the City of Toronto's Garden District includes the heritage-designated conservatories with permanent horticultural displays and seasonal floral shows. The park also includes a busy children’s playground and popular off-leash dog area. It is a vital area visited daily by tourists, local residents, and students from Ryerson and others as well as organized groups that hold events in the park. This is a unique opportunity to nurture and grow a thriving volunteer program at one of Toronto’s beloved green spaces, Allan Gardens. The Volunteer Program Coordinator reports to the Friends of Allan Gardens Program Manager, and works closely with City of Toronto staff at Allan Gardens. This hands-on role involves all aspects of volunteer management and is responsible for ensuring the program fits the needs of the diverse surrounding community.
Identify and develop seasonal volunteer roles and create volunteer management plans;
Promote seasonal volunteer opportunities through established channels;
Recruit, select and schedule volunteers;
Coordinate orientation and training for volunteers;
Plan and supervise volunteer activities;
Provide ongoing support and feedback to volunteers;
Review and update volunteer handbooks and orientation manuals;
Maintain volunteer database and administrative records in Timecounts;
Initiate and coordinate volunteer recognition initiatives;
Solicit and collect volunteer feedback and evaluations.
Produce content for Friends of Allan Gardens social media feed, e-newsletter and website as needed;
Respond to general inquiries including email, mail and telephone calls.
Oversee and participate in the delivery of volunteer-led programs including plant sales, tours, family drop-ins, workshops and various other special events.
Ensure daily maintenance of the Allan Gardens Children’s Conservatory and good repair of program equipment and materials;
Purchase program and other materials;
Other duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills:
Bachelor’s or College degree required in Horticulture, Botany, Environmental Sciences, Volunteer Management or related fields;
Minimum two years experience in successful program development and volunteer coordination;
“Must love plants” with gardening experience and working knowledge of tropical plants, cacti and succulents;
Excellent public speaking and presentation skills;
Experience working with people from all age groups and diverse backgrounds;
A people person with the ability to connect with others and forge strong relationships;
Highly organized, self-directed, analytical and IT competent;
Able to perform several tasks concurrently with well developed time management and organizational skills;
Self-motivated, while having the ability to inspire and motivate others;
Able to organize and maintain detailed records, complete paperwork and meet deadlines.
This is a part-time contract starting in mid to late April. The position is 3 days per week to start with the possibility of full-time work after 6 months. Regular weekend and evening work is required. Compensation is in the $21 - 24/hr range based on experience.
