Position: UX/UI Developer

We are looking to develop a reporting system for our members to help them understand their GHGs more effectively.

Job Purpose

The UX/UI Developer will report to the Executive Director and take responsibility for completing the development of an online tool to collect, manage, translate and display data of our members. They will also assist the Executive Director and other staff with the development of our online program and supporting resources to contribute to the overall success of the SLP in driving impact in the Halton, Hamilton and Niagara Region communities served.

The primary purpose of this role is to complete the development of the internal database, import all historical data and generate reports for all reporting members.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will continue the development a member database to collect, store and process information for and on behalf of our members:

  • Integrate a database tool using Wordpress, PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL;
  • Create data input forms and visual and graphical outputs for users
  • Generate aggregate reports for varying audiences;
  • Develop and implement data analyses, data collection systems and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency, accuracy, and user experience;
  • Integrate a water management tool, including data collection, analysis and interpretation;
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to ensure all data points are captured on member projects. This will assist in highlighting the sustainability successes of SLP members;
  • Support the upkeep of our digital resources and help administer the technical resources for new member onboarding;
  • Create records of methodologies for reference by SLP staff after the end of the work term
  • Identify and define process improvement opportunities;
  • Assist with development of apps or software related to sustainability education as part of the SLP.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Management, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics or related program. A strong interest or passion for sustainability and contributing to a healthy community would be preferred.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications, traits and abilities:

  • SQL or other database software experience is required
  • WordPress content population/development, working with WordPress plugins, etc., experience
  • Familiarity with G Suite and similar products
  • Familiarity with Greenhouse Gas accounting would be an asset
  • Strong Microsoft Office Skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
  • Positive, optimistic outlook and passionate about sustainability
  • Self-motivated, works well independently but thrives on teamwork
  • Analytical, scientific in approach to problem-solving
  • Proactive, forward-thinking
  • Outgoing, service-oriented, assertive
  • Excellent communications skills – verbally as well as written
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

Additional requirements of our funders stipulate that the successful candidate must be:

  • Under the age of (not yet turned) 31
  • Unemployed, underemployed, or a student/recent graduate
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or holding refugee status

This position will provide the candidate with the following technical and soft skill development opportunities:

Remuneration

This position is being funded by a federal grant for 7 weeks, spanning August 3 to September 17, 2021, ideally. Remuneration is $20 per hour for a 37.5-hour work week.

Location of Work

The majority of this work will be conducted from home or other location as determined by the successful candidate. Occasional work and in-person meetings may be conducted if possible adhering to COVID safety precautions at the Sustainability Leadership Hamilton office or other location.

Background

Sustainability Leadership, presented by Sustainable Hamilton Burlington, is a non-profit social enterprise, launched in 2011, dedicated to advancing adoption of sustainable business practices in our business organizations for a healthier environment and thriving, prosperous communities. We aim to make sustainability the new business norm and contribute to a sustainable, low carbon economy. We believe that by assisting our organizations (including businesses, institutions and nonprofit organizations) to achieve their potential through sustainability, and to adopt climate mitigation and adaptation measures, we will help create sustainable prosperity for our communities while contributing to greenhouse gas emissions reduction and other climate change goals.

The Sustainability Leadership Program (SLP) is our core, membership-based program that helps businesses to adopt sustainable business practices through education, driving measurable action and celebrating results. Business members follow an online, guided process where they work toward the attainment of a series of milestones. They set targets and action plans to reduce their environmental impacts, including carbon emissions/energy consumption, water consumption, waste to landfill and more.

Ultimately, they embed sustainability throughout their organizations and expand their impact through their value chains and in their communities. Through the SLP members also gain a better understanding of their climate impacts and risks, incorporating climate action into their strategy. Support provided throughout the SLP process includes technical advice, a comprehensive toolkit and other best practice resources, and access to a series of online webinars, workshops and one-on-one support sessions. SLP is a member of Green Economy Canada, a network of community social enterprises convening businesses setting sustainability targets.

Training to enhance the foundation of the candidate’s knowledge in software, front end development and database architecture will occur via online training programs and guidance from external consultants, whilst SLP knowledge and insight will be provided by the Executive Director.
