Positions: Good Food Farm Team & Education Facilitators

Fresh Roots is growing our team! We are looking to hire the full-time summer positions below. Applicants must meet Canada Summer Job requirements:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or to whom refugee protection has been conferred, and
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Note: Details such as dates and location are dependent on Canada Summer Jobs funding and may change in response to public health directives related to COVID-19. This may affect employment contracts.


(1) Good Food Market Lead

Description

The Fresh Roots Good Food Team operates our educational farms towards our production, sales and educational goals. In this key role under the direction of the Good Food Farm Manager, the Market Lead will operate our produce markets and CSA program. We are looking for a skilled retail manager, however will train inexperienced applicants who are motivated to learn.

Key Details

  • Location: Split between South and East Vancouver and our other Metro Vancouver sites according to programming needs (Coquitlam and/or Boundary Bay Schoolyards).
  • Dates: Seasonal Position, Early May to Mid-October
  • Hours: Full-time, Average 40 hrs/week. Expect more hours during peak season and less in the shoulders.
  • Compensation: $17-$18.75/hr, DOE
  • Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, must be available to work Saturday market days and evenings on Wednesdays

(2) Good Food Farm Worker

Description

If you love growing and sharing food with your community, landscaping, being outside with a team, and working with youth, this might be the position for you. Our farm team positions aim to empower new farmers to manage the ½ acre site they will cultivate through the season. Together, the farm team is responsible for assisting the Farm Manager in crop production (seeding, transplanting, weeding), harvesting, produce sales and leading youth in the growing and selling of our food.

Key Details

  • Location: East and South Vancouver secondary schools sites. Both sites are transit accessible.
  • Dates: Summer Season Position, May through August, with the possibility of a later start and finish date
  • Hours: Full-time. Hours fluctuate depending on seasonal demands and CSJ funding.
  • Compensation: $16-$18/hour, DOE.

(3) Farm Day Camp Facilitator

Description

If you love seeing kids find joy in holding worms or discover that kale is their favorite food, if you have a favorite silly vegetable song or game, and if you think camp is the best part of summer, this might be the position for you! Day Camp Facilitators will facilitate Camp Fresh Roots programming for kids ages 5-11 at our Vancouver schoolyard farms. Our camp programming includes educational activities, games, songs, farm work, harvesting, cooking, and sharing food, field trips, and more. Day Camp Facilitators will work as part of a small team to lead a mix of pre-planned and camper-directed activities, with the opportunity for you to create programming you’re passionate about.

Key Details

  • Position Location: South Vancouver and Coquitlam.
  • Application Deadline: Application review begins Feb 8th; position open until filled
  • Position Dates: June 27-Sept 2. 4-day weekend July 30-Aug 2
  • Pay Rate: $16-16.65/hour, DOE
  • Hours of work: Monday-Friday, 8:15-5:00. Average of 40 hours/week; some weeks may be up to 45 hours during July.

(4) SOYL Program Facilitator

Description

If you are passionate about working with teens (Grades 9 to 12), and cultivating personal growth and community leadership through food, this could be the job for you! As a SOYL Program Facilitator, you will work to inspire and engage SOYL youth at one of our schoolyard farms! As a SOYL Program Facilitator, you will work as a team to inspire and engage youth by leading workshops, assisting with logistics and communications and delivering the program itself. A key part of the SOYL program is getting youth participants involved in working on the farms. In this role, you will assist the Farm Manager in growing food on school grounds including leading youth in taking part in crop production (seeding, weeding, transplanting), harvesting and perennial / landscape care.

Key Details

  • Location: Coquitlam, Delta and South East Vancouver
  • Dates: May 16 - August 19
  • Pay Rate: $16.50 - $18.50/hour, DOE.
  • Work hours: Average work hours are 40/week. From May to July, working hours will be Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm with work locations including our program sites in Vancouver, Coquitlam and/or Delta, or home-based work. July through mid-August working hours will be 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at your program site.
  • Remote work and use of a personal computer will be required
  • No time off will be granted during July and August.
  • We are hiring 6 positions total across the 3 locations above

About Camp Fresh Roots

Camp Fresh Roots offers joyful, risk-aware day camp programming led by well-trained, caring staff on Fresh Roots schoolyard farms and food lands in South Vancouver and Coquitlam. We welcome campers from a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities, and we offer sliding scale registration to make our camps as accessible as possible. About SOYL

The SOYL (Sustainable Opportunities for Youth Leadership) program will engage with ~45 high school youth across the lower mainland in 2022. Youth receive a stipend for participation in the program, which includes work on the farms, at markets, in preparing food for shared meals, and engagement in workshops, field trips and activities. The program focuses on collaborative work, practical skills, food-systems thinking, and social-emotional development. SOYL runs for 6 weeks during the summer (summer school dates) at three locations: Coquitlam, Delta & Vancouver. Each SOYL location is situated on a Fresh Root’s schoolyard farm, with two SOYL facilitators at each location, who work collaboratively on that site with the Farm Manager to lead youth.
