Position: Urban Farm Manager
Organization: PACT Grow to Learn Program

Employment Type / Term: Seasonal contract position, 40 hours per week for 29 weeks from April 1st, 2019 – Oct 18th, 2019

Location: PACT Urban Farm at John Polanyi C.I., 640 Lawrence Ave. W., North York, ON M6A 1B1 (on TDSB property)

Reports to: PACT Grow to Learn (GTL) Program Manager

Compensation: Flat rate of $17 / hour, 40 hours per week working Mon-Fri

Position Description:

Reporting to the GTL Program Manager, the GTL Urban Farm Manager will provide a key leadership role in the overall planning, purchasing, production, distribution, maintenance, and reporting activities across PACT’s urban farm at John Polanyi C.I. during the 2019 growing season. Managing an assigned budget, they will be responsible for purchasing, tracking, preparing, storing and applying all required materials and equipment to support the end to end production activities of the Polanyi farm. The GTL Assistant Urban Farm Manager supports and reports to the Farm Manager in carrying out all the growing operations and related activities as outlined below.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field of study including environmental science, sustainable agriculture, food systems etc.

  • Minimum two years experience managing a medium to large sized production market garden or farm including staff and volunteers

  • Significant experience with school / community based organic gardening and all the required tasks, responsibilities and relationships this involves

  • Demonstrated capacity and sensitivity working with at-risk and underserved individuals and communities experiencing food-insecurity, marginalization, mental health issues and poverty

Experience

  • Experience managing a budget and purchasing required materials to support growing operations across a medium sized production farm or garden

  • Experience collecting and tracking statistics and data

  • Knowledge of and experience with food insecurity issues and programming

  • Experience managing volunteers, student and/or work placements

  • Knowledge and skills in food safety, healthy cooking and nutrition an asset

  • Experience managing a produce stall and/or working at farmer markets an asset

  • Knowledge and experience working with young people who have various special needs an asset

  • Experience designing, developing and delivering community based environmental programming an asset but not required

  • Demonstrated ability working effectively in both a self-directed and team environment

  • Demonstrated initiative, leadership, flexibility and creativity

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the Google Suite of cloud based applications: Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Drive etc.

  • Demonstrated ability and discretion in protecting the privacy of others and dealing with sometimes delicate and confidential information

Other requirements

  • Must complete full vulnerable sector police criminal reference check

  • Valid driver’s license and access to car an asset

  • First Aid and CPR training an asset
