Environmental Sustainabillity at Donalda

The Donalda club has taken several steps to becoming an eco-friendly golf course over the past decade. We are currently a member the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf, a designation we have maintained for the past 10 years. In the fall of 2013 the club underwent a major golf course renovation aimed at reducing pesticide and water inputs to our greens. During the process we removed all poa annua, a highly susceptible grass to disease and drought, from our putting surfaces with and replaced it with a much more hearty bentgrass plant that requires less overall inputs. The Donalda Club offers a unique habitat for wildlife in the city. We consistently see deer, fox, coyotes, rabbits and several different bird species living on the property throughout the year and have recently installed a set of healthy bee hives on the property to help with pollination of plants in the area. Donalda Club is very concerned with the environment and has had several tests done on the water quality of the East Don River to insure that no contaminates from the golf course are reaching the river from run off or leaching. Every year the tests were done at three locations on the property, where the river enters the property, the middle of the property and where the river exits the property, every year the tests have shown that the water quality of the river is improved once it passes through the course. This is due to the erosion control projects that Donalda has undergone in recently years. The projects involved restructuring the banks and planting native species of shrubs, trees and bushes to help stabilize the bank and control the speed of the river during heavy rain events.
