Position: Forest School Educator and Home-Learning Teacher
Organization: Oak and Orca School
Location: Victoria, BC

This is a combined position of Forest School Mentor and Home-Learning Teacher

Forest School Mentor:

Oak and Orca Bioregional Forest School hires mentors for our Forest School program to facilitate learning in an outdoor context two days a week rain or shine (or snow!) throughout the school year. There is no indoor option; all activites occur outdoors in a forest environment.

Forest School Mentor Responsibilities:

  • Plan activities and coordinate materials with other staff members
  • Share the planning of Workshops and the leadership/ support with the other mentors
  • Be prepared with the materials to plan and lead a small group of students as well as some activities for the larger group.
  • Lead and support activities throughout the day in large group and small group format.
  • Record, assess, and evaluate the Forest School program on a regular basis.
  • Help maintain school observations and reflections, providing regular updates and musings of the children's activities.


Certified teachers at Oak and Orca are responsible for teaching students in both the home-learning and on-site programs. While there are many responsibilities listed below, not all are typically included in one position. Most staff have a blend of responsibilities based on their specific skills as well as the needs of the school.

General Teacher Responsibilities:

  • Teach or co-teach workshops, reading, active play, and/or math groups
  • Teach in our Forest School, Pre-Primary, and/or Special Education programs
  • Support students to become active participants in their learning (planning, re ecting, etc.)
  • Report non-judgmentally and anecdotally, including tracking the BC learning standards
  • Manage student interactions in accordance with school culture/ethics/policies
  • Attend consensus staff meetings
  • General cleaning and maintenance of spaces
  • Support the growth of our programs (e.g. developing curriculum for home-learning programs, marketing, responding to new inquiries, supporting new coworkers, community events, etc.)

Home-Learning Specific Responsibilities:

  • Teach all learning areas for K-9 students or specific learning areas for 10-12 students
  • Guide student learning through the co-creation of an evolving learning plan
  • Provide individualized suggestions for a student’s learning based on emergent needs
  • Communicate with students and families through a variety of mediums (e-mail, Skype, phone...)

Preferred Qualifications:

CurrentFirst Aid Certification, must complete a Criminal Records Check

Preferred: BC Teaching Certification, ECE Certification, Related courses and training such as Forest & Nature School Practitioners Certification, Coyote Mentoring, 8-Shields.

Desired Experience & Skills:

  • Experience working with children 4 - 18 years old
  • Experience with supporting home learning students
  • Strong phone and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. quick typist, comfortable using internet and database systems, comfortable learning new programs, able to provide families basic trouble shooting)
  • Experience with alternative teaching practices that focus on child-directed learning
  • Understanding of bioregionalism and respect for the importance of ecological literacy
  • Willingness to be mentored in the philosophy of the school
  • Cooperative and communication skills, initiative and enthusiasm
