TEACHING JOBS

Position: Environmental Educator/Teacher
Organization: Oak and Orca School
Location: Victoria BC

Oak and Orca School is an alternative independent school in Victoria BC offering compassionate learning experiences for children pre-K to grade 12. We have several opportunities available for creative educators who have a passion for natural environments, working with home-learners, and teaching through inquiry.

We are a values-based non-profit at the core, and use consensus decision making within compassionate teams of educators. We offer a variety of programs for students in Victoria as well as connecting with families throughout B.C. who are learning at home. Educators take on a variety of tasks within the organization typically working on several different teams to create a full-time position that is challenging and multi-facteted.

The following are some of the things educators do at Oak and Orca (of course we can't all do everything even if we wish we could!):

  • Support families learning at home (Hands-On Home-Learning)
  • Teach in the forest (Bioregional Forest School)
  • Travel with our cycling field trips or blended field trips
  • Educate small groups of children in multi-age groups
  • Teach thematic workshops on topics of interest
  • Teach hands-on mathematics, science and engineering
  • Get students thinking and challenging themselves through child- and self-directed learning
  • Contribute to home-learners by writing articles, posts and learning activity ideas
  • Create thought-provoking curriculum that challenges the status quo
  • Support special education students learning on-site or at home

How to Apply:

  1. Read about our programs and postings on our website.
  2. Submit a teacher application form, a resume, and a cover letter. These can be submitted in person or by mail, fax, or e-mail. All documents submitted digitally must be in portable document format (pdf).
  3. Short listed candidates will be contacted for an interview.

Teaching Practices

Oak and Orca is a values based organization that approaches education differently than most schools. While these values inform our practice in a multitude of ways, there are some general practices that are consistently used in the school which are different from a typical school setting:

  • Bioregionalism
  • Compassionate Communication
  • Consensus
  • Student Autonomy
  • Hands-On
  • Ungraded
  • Multi-Age Groupings
