Position: Environmental Education Coordinator (Changing Currents)

Position Description: We are looking for a dynamic, driven and well-organized individual to join EcoSpark. The successful candidate will coordinate and implement EcoSpark’s core education programs with the Education Team throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and the Greenbelt. The Environmental Education Coordinator will undertake program planning and logistics, program implementation, and aid in further development and promotion of EcoSpark’s education programs with a focus on our Changing Currents program – a citizen science stream monitoring program with grade 6-12 students across the GTA.

This is a full-time contract to December 2019 (2 years and 9 months) with a possibility of contract extension.

Position Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Facilitate outdoor experiential workshops for teachers and students in water quality monitoring using chemical, physical and biological indicators
  • Coordinate the planning and logistics of EcoSpark’s Changing Currents program
  • Inventory and maintain Changing Currents of monitoring equipment
  • Prepare benthos reference samples and kits
  • Run teacher training for new Changing Currents teachers
  • Ensure that student-generated data from Changing Currents is accurately collected, validated, and published online
  • Provide support for teachers to undertake stewardship and restoration activities following their water quality monitoring with Changing Currents
  • Develop and update environmental education resources
  • Support the delivery of teacher professional development workshops
  • Promote EcoSpark’s educational programming to schools and at events
  • Contribute to fundraising and reporting in support of EcoSpark’s education programs
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Ontario Teacher Certification or equivalent certification
  • University degree or college diploma in environmental science, studies or a related discipline
  • Knowledge of the Ontario high school science curriculum
  • Knowledge in watershed monitoring and water issues in Ontario
  • Experience facilitating environmental education workshops with students
  • Experience coordinating program/project logistics
  • Experience with the formal education system
  • Proven time management skills and the ability to manage a diverse workload
  • Superior communication skills both written and verbal
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ontario Benthic Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) Certification
  • First Aid Certification
  • Experience working or volunteering with a not-for-profit
