Position: Director of Investments
Organization: Dragonfly Ventures
Location: Toronto or the surrounding area (2-hour radius)

Dragonfly Ventures (“Dragonfly) is a mission driven family office contributing to a toxic-free planet with humanity living synergistically with each other, the earth, her creatures and spirit. A lean and committed team of eight, including advisors, achieves this goal through investments (public and private), philanthropy and collaborations. Dragonfly is funded by a private wealth holder who is active in the business as Co-CEO.

The work focuses on four interrelated areas that we feel are ripe for intervention and in which we can play an active role; toxic elimination, freshwater conservation, climate resilience, and land and soil health. The investment portfolio prioritizes mission over return. We approach our work from a set of shared values including diversity, equity, disruption, intuition, learning, and collaboration.

Dragonfly is expanding our team to bring our private wealth management and portfolio reporting in-house. To this end we are seeking an investment professional to support our investments as directed by the Co-CEOs. Critical to this role is an understanding and commitment to Dragonfly’s vision, mission, values and issue areas central to our work, in addition to experience with financial analysis.

  • Post-secondary degree in business with a Finance focus
  • Minimum five years of private market investment experience
  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment
  • Proven record in undertaking due diligence on investment opportunities
  • Passion for environmental and social sustainability
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

We consider the following to be strong assets of the chosen candidate:

  • CPA, CFA or MBA
  • Previous professional or volunteer work experience in the social or environmental sector
  • Previous role(s) in small or entrepreneurial firms

1. Deal Flow Sourcing & Due Diligence

  • Develop a broad network to identify new investments opportunities and approaches to empower Dragonfly’s mission. Private market investments are made in North America with an increasing focus on Canada. Travel is required for due diligence.
  • Work in partnership with Co-CEOs to review investment opportunities from the identification to decision stage, taking the lead on deep due diligence. Final investment decisions are made by Dragonfly’s Co-CEOs.
  • Work in partnership with the team to identify and implement creative investment tools for new investments to best meet mission and embody our values
  • Provide ongoing feedback, together with other team members, to support the continuous improvement of the investment process

2. Portfolio Investment Monitoring

  • Serve as the first point of contact for investees and external managers
  • Monitor all existing investments (public and private, direct and with external managers) to track mission, corporate management and financial performance
  • Manage follow-on investments or investment extension requests as required

3. Investment Reporting

  • Prepare, with support from Dragonfly’s CFO, quarterly reports
  • Provide ongoing feedback to support the continuous improvement of the reporting process for investments as part of an integrated approach between financials and mission

4. Team engagement

  • Participate, as a member of the team, supporting operations and strategy as required
  • Participate in quarterly team meetings
  • Organize regular Dragonfly investment committee meetings

This is a full-time permanent position based in Toronto or the surrounding area (2-hour radius). The Dragonfly team does not have formal office so the position can work out of a home office or choose their own co-working space and will have access to a shared Executive Assistant. Compensation will be commensurate with skills and experience. Benefits include extended health and paid vacation.
