Position: Programs Manager
Organization: Embark Sustainability
Location: Simon Fraser University (SFU) - Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver (alternating locations)

Compensation: $23 - $24.50/hour (commensurate with experience) + benefits
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week
Work Term: 1 year with a possibility of renewal

Embark is a student-led not-for-profit located on the SFU campuses that catalyzes student sustainability journeys through our grant, advocacy, and student-designed programming. Our work is supported by the 35,000+ undergraduate and graduate student members that we represent.

Position Overview

The Programs Manager is responsible for overseeing the management and development of all programming while supporting student-led events and initiatives. The Programs Manager approaches sustainability with an intersectional lens, and prioritizes justice, equity, decolonization, diversity, and inclusion (JEDDI) in their work.

The Programs Manager trains and supports volunteers and coordinators throughout the academic school year, providing opportunities for their personal and professional development. On an on-going basis, the Programs Manager recruits volunteers and seeks to involve them in areas of interest. As a team, Embark’s members contribute to advancing the organization’s priority areas of food systems change, climate action, and social sustainability.

The Programs Manager continually seeks opportunities to forge partnerships with campus and community partners that have common goals. Additionally, the Programs Manager designs and administers the evaluation of programs and events so that Embark can continually evolve to most effectively serve its members. This position reports to and works closely with Embark’s Executive Director, while collaborating regularly with the Design & Communications Manager and Gardens Coordinator.

In light of COVID-19, this position will be mostly virtual for the time being, with some in-person work for programs. This is subject to change, pending campus reopening and in accordance to Provincial Health Orders.

Responsibilities
Team Management and Support

Coordinators/Programs Assistant

• Coaches students to achieve their potential in their respective areas and roles
• Supports the coordinators with the planning, organization, and execution of regular team meetings
• Supports students with volunteer management and engagement
• Communicates with student team to ensure materials and social media content reflects upcoming programming

Volunteers

• Meets with students interested in volunteering with Embark
• Hosts volunteer orientations and training sessions as needed (eg. Food Rescue program)
• Provides opportunities for volunteers to self-identify areas for personal and professional growth
• Facilitates volunteer reflection on ways for volunteer roles to evolve and develop within the organization to ensure volunteer retention
• Creates team-building and social opportunities for volunteers
• Communicates effectively with volunteers on a regular basis

Programs

Learning Gardens

• Supports the work of the Gardens Coordinator and provides assistance with planning and organizing garden programming in Embark’s Learning Gardens
• Updates garden policy documents with the Gardens Coordinator as needed

Food Rescue and Community Kitchen

• Recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to maintain our programming
• Provides program administrative support
• Assists in logistics for distribution and event days when necessary
• Update policies and procedures for in-person activities, in alignment with Provincial Health Orders

Sustainability Career Night + Other Events

• Collaborates on partnership events with other groups (e.g. Career Night)
• Recognizes programming and advocacy opportunities as they emerge; directs volunteers and coordinators in effectively designing and delivering new events and programming
• Plans, organizes, and executes Embark Camp annually

Climate Action Student Collaborative

• Meets regularly with SFU’s Sustainability Office team to oversee the program and make changes based on feedback
• Plans logistics for the program, including supporting curriculum development, orientation, and participant application process

Community partnerships

• Fields questions about Embark from SFU community members and the public
• Seeks and arranges opportunities to reach out to groups in the community (e.g. tabling at events); organizes volunteers and resources for such events
• Communicates with relevant partners about upcoming programs and events

Administration

• Provides content updates for website to reflect current programming
• Prepares materials for outreach/tabling
• Books rooms and orders catering for events and team meetings
• For virtual events and activities, coordinates Zoom and other logistics

Accountability and Reporting

• Contribute to writing a summary of impact and activities for our Annual Report
• Keep records of engagement, programs, and events statistics
• Attend regular staff meetings and communicate with team members

Ideal Candidates Have:

• Education and/or experience in developing sustainability initiatives with demonstrated success
• Interest in exploring sustainability with an intersectional, just and equitable lens
• Experience managing volunteers and providing guidance
• Ability to develop and facilitate programs
• Ability to professionally represent the organization in interactions with individuals and groups across the university
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines
• Excellent organizational, administrative, research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent leadership and project management skills
• Professional and context-appropriate online communication skills
• Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, online calendars, Asana, GSuite, and email
• Experience working in a not-for-profit environment is an asset
